i was looking at the paint on hobbylinc.com and i was wandering if you could suggest somee good military colors to start with?

sure thing...

for german desert schemes use xf-60 dark yellow!
xf-65 field grey (kind of geyish green)
xf-50 field blue (kind of greyish/greeny blue)
xf-58 olive green
xf-62 olive drab
xf-63 german grey
xf-10 flat brown
xf-51 khaki
xf-52 flat earth (usefull for quite a range of things!)
xf-64 red brown (great for wood colour)

I would always avoid the urge to use gloss paint in military models. If something is actually gloss in reality almost certainly a semi-gloss finish would look more realistic on the model.

It is handy to have a semi-gloss black around.
