There was a program recently about some bodies found in a peat bog preserved for over a thousand years in remarkable condition. You are spot on it is lack of oxygen that is the key to the preservation. That tank looks in better condition than curent ones!!!

What a great post! And a fantastic find. It really does look as if once the mud is wiped off it will look in factory condition.
A great find!
Did a bit of searching...and apparently a few more tanks have been found in different bogs around the world, check this Stug out http://www.detektorweb.cz/index.4me?...2988&mm=1&vd=1
I Dont understand the lingo, translations anyone?

I would imagine a big enough shell could easily do that?

I think the sites some kind of metaldetecting military artifacts site. Theres a metal detector in the top left hand corner and German WW2 relicas are worth a bomb these days! I would expect this Stug is worth several hundrad thousand on the open market!

Doubt if a shell would tip a StuG over, their low profile and low centre of gravity would probably prevent that. Another great couple of links!!

The U Boat in the above post is actually on display in Birkenhead, worth a visit if you're near that part of the country.

I would have agree but unfortunately the museum that housed the U-boat (534 I think!) closed down early last year. I was lucky enought to go round everything before they closed the doors. There was the u-boat, HMS Bronnington, a Falklands Frigate Plymouth I think, and a Falklands British Sub, HMS Onyx.

Why we can't support maintaining our heritage with things such as this is completely beyond me and what the ultimate destiny of the U-boat is I have no idea. Suffice to say I think it is a disgrace that we don't protect our history to help the youth of today understand where they came from and what conflicts have shaped our modern day country.

VERY good point Richard. Hence the modern day ignorance we have to live with. Ok I'm only 23 but with a (much) older brother and Dad with a keen interest in military history and militaria in general has taught me more than a few things! I think most believe that what we need to know we learn in school!!
