I discovered that the museum closed down shortly after making that post. It's the first time I realised the U boat was there and was looking for the museums details online to make a visit!

It's a desperate shame how we don't maintain our heritage or even keep much of our nautical and military heritage, so much is simply scrapped and especially as we have such a proud naval history too.

I have just posted a few pictures of U-534 in the boats section of the gallery taken when I went to see her in May '05.

A very interesting day out and an amazing experience to walk through her.

On the link above there were some vids of a restored panther too...

This looks a little too close for comfort...I'm not sure what the driver is doing but maybe needs to work on his clutch control a little first!

There's a nice vintage clip of a panther at speed too.

It would be interesting to see if they could track down the crews (Russian and German) that manned that tank, if they are still alive.

It would make for a great Discover Channel special.

I should be getting cable tv this week - have missed out on those tank restoration shows as we can't receive freeview tv in this part of the country until 2012!

I just checked out the listings on uk tv for the Panther restoration and there's a whole day of "Tank Workshop" being repeated on Saturday the 9th June!
