Fun in the sun!!

WooHoo!!! the sun came out and so did the Tigers!
Havent been around for a while so here without further ado is a quick update. I really wish i had more time to spend on my main vice in life, but anyway i have managed to solve some major problems and also get down to some finishing.
The Tamiya 1/16 R/C collection is growing slowly with the addition of a few additions from Fleabay.
As mentioned in a previous thread i began purchasing knackered tanks (Or ones which were in need of a little love and attention) to spend some time on. The collection so far- 2x King Tigers (1 of which is my first build and in original kit build the other one i have really gone to town on, more details later) 1x Tiger 1 (My avatar!!) 1x sherman (in need of full paint job and some modding) 1x R/C Kubelwagon (Still in its box)
My main ongoing project the King Tiger just seems to get more and more ridiculous in the mods i have added and am thinking of adding.
Mods so far.
Turret wireless cam to work in conjunction with eyetop lcd goggles. (not picured as it was battle day!)
Smoke machine R/C control from TX.
Sealed ball bearing transmission shaft supports.
Home made metal tow ropes and structure add ons.
Coil sprung road wheel suspension.
To list just a few! (one day i will do a proper build thread!)
ANyway...some piccys for you!

Still needs a bit of finishing but i am kinda proud of the way the tow ropes etc turned out.

More finishing required!

Let battle commence!! Since fitting down gearing to the King Tiger it now moves at the correct scale speed. That means it is about half the speed of a standard Tamiya Tiger, a definate disadvantage in a scrap!!
All was not lost though. You only have to hit the Tiger one 4 times to knock it out, it takes 7 or 8 to knock out the King Tiger.

"you've had it now.....nooooooo 12 second reload time!!!!"

The interior of the King Tiger has been completely rejigged. This makes for more battery space and much easier access. The brass slotted hex screw is for filling the smoker. The switch panel is dsigned so that i will never have to take the superstructure off to recharge batterys or refill the smoke machine, access is gained through the rear main hatch. Fitted front alloy motor guard (Pictured below) for numerous reasons - to cut down motor noise, stop grease splats and prevent wires getting snarled. for those wondering where the speaker has gone, it is now in the turret.

2 x Kingtigers
1 x Tiger I
1 x Kubelwagen

AND

1 x Sherman?

Ouch...methinks the balance is slightly against the allies!

Is there anyway of hacking the black plastic enclosure off the infrared targeting thing and making it a little more scale looking?

I have thought about it many times. The sensors on the battle system pick up in four directions (i think) front/aft/sides. I have seen other Tams with the sensors spread around the superstructure for a more realistic hit count, as a shot up the jacksy would 9/10 times be the end of the battle. I must admit the one thing i have not investigated too much is the battle systems. My trials and errors with modding have not all gone smoothly (metal tracks without geardowned gearboxes do not last 5 minutes, kiss goodbye to the stock bearings!). I will have to make sure i know what i am doing when stripping the IR gear.
Believe it or not the Sherman kicks ass in the right hands. Faster turret rotation and a damn sight more agile than both the King Tiger and the Tiger 1. Ok, so it has to hit the tigers something nuts like 10 times to knock one out, but believ it or not it is doable...turn-shoot-run, before the Tigers can get their bearings.
(1 hit from either tiger spells doom for the Sherm)
The picture of the Panther you posted just reminds me how much i want the recently released tamiya 1/16. It's a real beauty. sadly its still around the £500 mark for the base model. I will have to wait ubtil the price comes down a bit next year.

Great models Terry and I bet a lot of fun in the back garden with the family. I don't think I would be able to get the missis to "Play" though!! Never mind she's good in the kitchen!

Hi Bunk! Hope you and yours are afloat and well.
Long time no chat!!
What isnt pictured is the damage done after the kids had finished playing. The tiger 1 is now minus mudflaps and both exhausts after my daughter reversed at full speed into the shed! Oh well, thats what dads are for i guess .

We've missed your humour here, nice to hear from you again. As for battle damage, thats the price to pay for having someone to play with!!

Boats all floating and the coaster progressing slowly. I might update the build thread soon but I haven't had a lot of leave so I haven't done a great deal recently. Plodding on though and looking good so no complaints.
