      Flak 38 crew

Hi guys an' gals. I thought it was about time I tried my new camera to post some pics. You'll have to forgive the quality 'cos I've got LOTS to learn about taking pictures!

These are 4 of the 5 figures from Tamiya's Flak 38 crew set. (I've got all five but for some reason I just CANNOT get a focussed picture of the other figure! I even tried clamping the camera down but not even that worked!).

They're not quite finished. I intend to 'muddy' them up a little and add them to a small diorama with the Flak 38 and a Demag 7. I'll also be giving them a matt coat to get rid of the shine.

All comments would be welcome but I have a couple of questions.

Would a Demag 7 be able to tow the gun (it is the Flakvierling version)?

I've got a colour scheme for the Demag in the sand/green/brown camo similar to the outfits on the crew. Would the Flak 38 ever have been painted in a similar scheme or am I limited to basic sand or grey?

Let's see if I can upload my pics .....

Hi Gern yes the demag 7 was powerful enough to tow the flak 38, if it were me i would paint the gun in your base colour dark yellow etc and then camouflage the gun shield, i imagine some flak 38 crews did camouflage there guns but we are all allowed a little artistic licence from time to time. Your figures are looking good too, hope you post the shots when completed.

Nice work on the figures Gern. Lots of attention to detail and the faces look good to. Look forward to the finished thing.

Try backing away from the figures a bit until you get the focus right, then cut the bit you want out of the image, expand and save it and then post it. You can cut images about with all sorts of programs so you don't need to be looking for anything fancy.
I'll be saving these as an example to me of waht can/should be done.
      Impressive.

      Hi folks,

Thanks for your kind comments and assistance.

PJP - I'm sorry I don't know your name - I've tried every setting I can find on my camera from distances of a couple of centimetres to about half a metre from this figure!

Ideally what I need is a setting called 'Close-ups of scale model figures'!

My camera is an Olympus X42 with 12 megapixels. Any suggestions?

      Hi Gern.

If your camera has a macro mode (usually an icon of a flower) then use this. Although on a digital camera its not a true macro, it should allow you to focus closer. Alternatively, take the shot from about a metre away. Because the subect it relatively small on a largely white background, ensure that the figures are in the middle of the screen so that the camera can focus. (Also if the scene is a little dark, your camera may have trouble focusing.)
Because the image quality at 12 meg, it should be easy to crop within photoshop etc, and still have a good picture.

      Good luck.

I'm sorry, I should have written more clearly and said to take the pictures from further away . Centre the image in the viewfinder. Make sure that the focus info in the viewfinder (usually red lights or similar) identify the model and then take several shots. Down load , examine and trim as suggested. If the down load shows poor images, move a bit further away and repeat until the are sharp. It sounds a bit messy but should only take a few minutes.
I can't speak with certainty about your specific camera as I use Canon, but there will be some kind of focus indicator in the viewfinder.
You may find it helpful to get lots of light on them as well.

      Regards
Peter/Pedro(if playing rugby)/oy!/hey you will usually work. (PJP)
