Parafilm.

There is a first class product called 'Parafilm' which has remarkable bi-lateral masking capabilities and ideal for model making, originally intended for laboratory applications it resembles a thin waxy film that comes in strips, place a piece over a shape such as a cockpit canopy and slowly pull it over the shape, then trim off at the base with a craft knife or single edged razor blade.
I would imagine that its original application would have been to protect tools and instruments as in effect it will stick to itself.
Not sure where you can get this maerial from these days,as mine was a pack picked up from a distant IPMS nationals, but it sure is useful and well worth trying out.
