How I Scratch Build A Ruined Building.

Hi friends.


Having been asked to show how I make a ruined building(Ron,spanner570) and the votes for it showing that you want it.


Well...here goes.


I usually make up the design as I go along,but do work to a scale.(but nothing is exact)


This will be 1/48th scale about 6.2mm to the foot, but I may make it about 7mm.


This will take me about 2 weeks and I will post pics of nearly every stage as I go along.


All questions will be answered to the best of my ability.So feel free to ask away.

Here is a pic of some of the bits I will be using.These will include plastic sheet of varying sizes plastic rod. strips of wood and a pre formed brick sheet(slaters).

Ok then,I went with 7mm=foot.


Any measurement you see will be in mm


The plastic sheet I've used is 2mm/80thou.


Here is my first basic drawing in of windows and doors.(How boring some cryor not).

I know 7mm = 1ft gives a scale of 1/43.5 and is the same scale as Corgi diecast cars, but it seems a bit odd when we normally use 1/48. I just wondered why you chose it Ralph?

You are correct about the scale.


When I first started to scratch build buildings for my railway layout I looked at real buildings and saw so much variation in size and design.


I chose to go with this scale simply because I feel it gives a better impact to the view of the building itself when a 1/48 vehicle(afv) is placed with it.

Windows and door cut out.


I then added the brick sheet and cut the widows and door out.

For the sides of the window surround,I cut a strip of 0.5mm thick sheet 4mm wide.


To this I added 2 piece's of 2mm half round rod side by side,on top of these I added apiece of 1.6mm rod.


These parts were then glued to the sides of the window.


The last 2 pics show the profile of the side window surround.

Sills and lintels added using 2mm sheet each 47mm long and 4mm wide.

Door surround and lintel added using 2mm sheet and 2mm wide(sides) and lintel 2mm sheet and 3mm wide.


I also added some fancy decoration to the window lintels using what I used for the sides cut to 2mm and laid on their ends.


I also added the side wall and cut out the ends to show damage to the wall.


All this will be left until tomorrow for the glue to set .

don't you find the brick sheet,card and strips costly or do you know were to get them at a good cost ?


and thats what puts me off using card and strips,


and use balsa wood,


but real would like some of the brick sheet inn 1.35,

Yes they can be costly if bought all at once,but I have collected bits and pieces over the years so I don't tend to notice the cost so much.If I was to buy what I posted at the beginning it would cost about £35.I also prefer to work with plastic when I can


So I guess this building will probably have cost under £10.


Also Doing this myself I get an individual building that no one else has.

very true,Ralph,thats the very same reason I,do build my ones,


and as you say its a bit of a cost all upfront,but you may get 3 or 4 building from a pack of strips,and just have the brick sheet as a cost,


looks good and its all yours :D
