Hi folk,
Ive not done any modeling of any sort for many years (ether plastic or balsa). Anyway Ive found the bug again and have decided to give it a try again. I have a couple of questions for you good folk out there so here goes.
1) To get me going Ive bought the Guillow's P51 Mustang kit. Now according to the plans - although its a rubber powered plane it gives info on converting it to a small rc plane. For the engine it suggests the cox 0.020 pee wee. Ive found a couple of them on ebay but I understand that they are no longer produced. Can anyone suggest any alternatives - possibly even a small electric that I could use instead?
For the fuel tank it suggests the Perfect No. 2 Med. midge wedge tank. I cant seem to find any - can anyone tell me where I can get one - or something that will do the same job? (Ive tried ebay - no luck there).
I know some of you will say its not the best kit to get started with for rc but at this stage Im more interested in learning how to build them again - and for that reason its just right for me. Besides its nice and cheap

2) Can anyone suggest any sources of kits in the UK please? I dont want ARTF kits as I prefer the fun of building them and at present I have a lot to relearn before I venture into building from a plan rather than a kit. My interest lies in WW1 & 2 planes rather than sports type.

Hi Antony, I can't be of any help as I'm in the same situation myself, (I'm building the Guillows Corsair which I chose because of the looooooong front end to hopefully have enough room for the 2 ch. r/c gear and electric motor), so I'm looking forward to any answers you receive especially re. the electric motor, about which I know very little except that they don't run well on av-gas!

Firstly, A Warm welcome to both Antony & Bartley,

Hopefully we can help you out, it is always nice to see people coming back into the Hobby.

I do remember the Guillows Kits very well, there are more around than you think, I usually see these in quite a few model shops and to be honest I have been surprised to see them still available. They are nice kits though and ones that I have indeed toyed with the idea of buying and converting for micro r/c.

Cox engines are not as scarce as you think as well. They were certainly good little engines and if looked after, they will certainly last sometime. There are plenty of Hits on these if you do a google search.

The Prices are in Dollars, given the current exchange rate, you will be looking at least half that price in Sterling.

I have seen that the engines are the Cox TD .049...slightly more powerful, If this suits you you could also consider the British made PAW Engines....they also do a .049 and are superb quality engines...I have 2 of them that have lasted me for years.

I would suggest a look at the built up kits from a few other suppliers first. Converting the Guillow`s isnt all that easy for a beginner and modeling has taken giant leaps since they were introduced. The scale model isnt always an ideal choice either especialy at smaller sizes. Have a look at RBC kits. Jets, scale, non-scale, smaller sizes. Lightweight R/C gear and small electric (brushless and conventional can) make these and other laser cut kits are easy build and proven fliers. Available from Puffin Models in UK(they are expert in electrics) , worth a look even if you stick to Guillows for lightweight r/c stuff. www.rbckits.com and www.puffinmodels.com

I am converting a Guillows Camel at the moment I am using the following in my plane. I think Duncan is right though the Guillows is not the best to start off with.
