Front Dive Planes

Here is the assembly of the front dive planes. These are the parts that go together.....

Here it is assembled....

The assembley needs to be a fixed distance from the bottom of the hull, a fixed distance from the tip of the bow, centered on the longitudinal midline of the hull and perpendicular to the hull. A 4 way line up, without the aid of any marking, all has to be done by careful measuring. There are hull to hull variations and it is important to measure up your own hull rather than relly on the measurement given in the plans; mine was 2mm different in the vertical, it doesn't sound like much but it would have ment the planes binding in the top hull cut outs. The olny way to do this is to build some sort of jig. This is my rather simple effort made out of 4 strips of balsa.

Finally here it is placed in the hull. You need to camfer the supports that bond to the hull to the same shape of the hull to ensure a good fit. Also they need to be sanded down just enough that the fit without puting pressure on the lower hull and pushing it out sligtly. I kept sanding untill I could rotate the assemble about its axis attached to the jig so that it just slides into the vertical without rubbing the hull. I spot glued it with fast setting epoxy to check everything was right prior to bonding it in permanently.

It is this type of foreward planning and thinking that I enjoy watching.

A lovely job again and all due to the time and effort you put into the planning. The jig is a great idea and makes you wonder how else it could be done!!

Always been impressed with you sub guys. I must say that the kit looks very impressive, but then Think I'll follow you're build and who knows I might learn a thing or two about subs and the build one. As a novice when it comes to subs I have a question; can you sink the sub and control it underwater and if so how deep can it go? Another thing; if it is under the surface how the hell do you know where it is?

i dont know much about r/c subs so someone correct me if im wrong.

there are two types of r/c subs:

Surface Runner: runs just like an r/c boat, only on the surface and cant dive

Static Diver: Dives in just the same way as a real sub does (by using ballast tanks)

Dynamic Diver: Dives by using fins (im not sure what they are called, the stabalizer things on the side of subs) and its spead to drag it under the water. (dont quote me on this as im not entirely sure.)

Usually r/c sub'ers will put a flag on a pole on the highest point of the sub so it stays above the surface and you can see where it is. Or a brigtly coloured arial is used.

I suppose in theory they can go as deep as the transmitters/recievers range will allow the. So, you would either have to have a very deep lake and be very brave in trusting you know where it is, use it in a swimming pool so you can see it at all times, or....us a pinger on a boat on the surface. (an r/c version of sonar)

I thought static dive meant it just sank.....ya know ...like some kinda cork got pulled out and "blub blub blub"..."vee are zinking"

and Dynamic dive was when Batman and Robin (scale ofcourse) were on board using BatBlowballasters.

As for surface runner......all i thought was ...why not build a raft!!!!

Not much done for a couple of weeks now. Moved over to the electrical side and building it on the bench to test everything before it all goes in. I have 17 discrete functions - all need a servo wire connection and many a separate power connection too.... wires everywhere!

Good to see all that work coming together. Beautifully clean. The front plane retract system on my Typhoon is currently extracted and has been since I became ill in May. I haven't had the enthusiasm to get into the electrics to solve the intermittent fault in the relays. Mind you it hasn't stopped me getting distracted from fitting lights to my tug and getting the Northwind yacht race ready. And the UB-16 is ready for a dip in the test tank when I can persuade the wife to go out for an afternoon - what she doesn't know about she'll not fret about! Once that's done it's back to those front dive planes hopefully. Keep up the good work Ramesh - I'm enjoying your build.

with regard to depth for model subs it does depend on the water !- but we can confirm we have had model subs to a depth of 22 feet under full RC control, we had sub aqua divers in with the models and an underwater cameraman- he filmed the models at this depth under operation, the water was crystal clear fresh mains water, not heavily chlorinated like a swimming pool,
