I usually bob mine up every few metres if the water is very muddy, to keep track of it.

Just a quick update guys. I've been away so not to much done but the pace is picking up. I have installed the catch that will hold the top and bottom of the hull together. I deviated from the kit method of using a screw, as this would definately have lead to scracthed paintwork with slippery screwdrivers pondside, and would have distracted from scale appearance. I have also been filling in gaps between the 2 havles (my hlaves wouldn't natually come together without excessive force and there was a gap at the bow joint). I have built the bottom rudder and rear dive planes up. Yet to fit the top rudder as I am trying to figure the best way to fit the stern lights into it. Next stage is to mark out new location for the 280 odd limber holes and fill in the scribe lines of the existing ones (which are all the wrong size and in the wrong location). I'll take somemore pics when I have washed the hull of the filler dust!

I thought it had gone a bit quiet with this one. I missed seeing it's progress!

Heres the front of the hull with the correcting of the gap. I used Milliput filler. Still needs a final coat of Squadron Green to finish it off.

The rear end starting to look a little ship shape. Still some green stuff to sand off to fill the join lines, but nearly done.

Heres the front catch. You can see I have used a sheet of plasticard to protect the Milliput filler from chipping during repeated opening/closing of the hull.

I'm surprised at how big the gap is at the front. You've done a lovely job on it though and I am sure it will be completely invisible when painted.

Make sure you use plenty of waterproof grease on the catch though, any water getting into the balls could cause it to seize and give you grief trying to get it apart one day.

The Hull as supplied is missing the housing for the port and and starboard towed array sonar. Unlike most other forms of marine modelling, photos and detailed infromation on the under water appearance of military submarines are hard to locate at the best of times, especially so in the Cold War Soviet Union. So may be not surprisingly the Engel Hull is missing a few details. Still I have their new updated & reprofiled hull, I'd have hoped that they would have made other corrections as well.

Heres a couple of pictures of the real one looks like....

Here I have started to built the framework....

Here it is with filler partly sanded to shape...

Here I have shot some primer to show up and high and low spots. Still a bit more sanding to do but its nearly there.

I wanted to have operating missile doors. No firing missile at the moment but I may hide a wireless camera under there. As I was only going to make 2 door, I didn't bother with making a mould and simply cast the door in situ with epoxy putty.

First stage is to cut out the doors and file to scribed lines. I then placed a plece of plasticard below to the same countour as the hull form. Any small gaps I filled with filler.

Next step is to coat the bottom of the plasticard and the sides of the cut outs with vaseline, and fill the hole with epoxy putty.

Once set, sand it flat to the hull shape ....

Now with some luck and crossed fingers it pops out in one piece when the plasticard floor is removed.

Whats left is a nice fitting pair of doors of scale thickness

The next step will be to split the moulding down the middle to form 2 separate doors and do some tidying up of the edges so that they can be fitted and removed with minimal resistance. Then the hard part, getting them to open under radio control.

Very ingenious! When I saw this done before I had no idea how it had been done - and now I know. Thanks for that. Really nice to see things moving again whilst mine languishes while I try to rekindle my drive to finish it! Keep the pictures coming - they will eventually persuade me to get back to building.
