Paint on, paint off !

I got to looking at the outer hull tonight, and after all the problems I have had with the paint i decided it looked awfull and have removed the worst sections.

The parts that have needed multiple coats were starting to lose the etching on the hull. And I could of left it but every time I looked at it, it was catching my eye. And for paint that had not applied very well it was damned hard to get off. I had to resort to a stanley knife blade and scratch it off VERY gently!

But one good thing that has come out of it I have resurected my airbrush, after purchasing a new nozel its working fine. So thats definately the way to go tommorrow. Blending in the old and new paint could be a barrel of laughs as well

I have not had time to do anything on the boat today, but I did find these pictures last night for some detailing.

Here they are if they are any use to anyone

I know they arent the same boat, but the detailing for rust and C.W.L etc is handy.

I have finally got the black paint on the outer hull looking half way near decent !

I looked at it again this morning, and I could hardly see the etching around the missile hatches or some of the tiles on the upper hull. So I got my scribe and decided to remove the paint from the etchings around the hatches. Seemed to go really well, then before I knew it I hat re-etched the entire upper half of the hull.

There was black and white stripes everywhere! I got a bit of wet and dry and snaded down the entire hull, basically to remove the now raised edges of the tiles that had quite a bit of paint on them.

Must admit though there were a few times when I thought I was going to have to contact Engel and ask "How much would it be for a new upper hull for a Typhoon?"

But I put a first coat on and it went on really well, and by the time the second coat was dry I am pleased with it. I think with the extra etching the tiles stand out a little more, without looking unrealistic.

So back to the detailing

HOW MUCH

I am glad I managed to get it sorted, I think there might have been a few queries about that amount of money!

One of our Club members actually covered his Akula with a mixture of iron filings and varnish before leaving it outside for a few days. The result was very realistic. I might be tempted to do something similar on my Typhoon if the paint peoblems continue.

Wow he must have been brave to do that !!!! I am not sure I would have covered my Typhoon with varnish.

Many years ago I used to work for a DIY chain, I am sure that one of the courses I went on for varnishes etc, said they can have some disasterous reactions with types of plastics. Liquefying surfaces etc.

I am just guessing here I dont really know, but I am not sure what the gel coat is made from on the outer hull ?

On a similar note, I found some old spray paint off one of my old cars. The body of this car was GRP ( and it wasnt a Robin Reliant either ) with a gel coat finish. I spoke to a friend who works at there franchised dealers and he told me that the problems I have been having with mine will be due to wax or whatever they lubricate the mouldings with, still being on the surface. They use something called "Spirit Wipe" to remove it prior to priming and painting. I know wise after the event but I will try it next time I think.

Arrrrr yes, the perils of oil. I remenber once having to go through a very similier learning curve with a large scale HMS Illustrious... A great kit which took its three coats of paint with out a murmer and then shed the lot over the next month of pond trials!

sand paper and lighter fuel works wonders before base coating...much as i hate to say it, you might want to consider a full strip and re-spray as the chances are you will be faced with more shedding.

Train hard, fight easy!

I must admit the thought of the paint coming off in the lake had crossed my mind. In all honesty it wouldnt be the worst thing to happen to it. The paint looks ok at the moment, but it wouldnt break my heart to have to remove it all.

I dont think I will elect to do it voluntarily, because I am sure some of it would fall off and other bits would stick with amazing force!

The problem I have is "Fish Eyes". It must not have been cleaned effectivley as I said previous. I have removed sections of it to test adherence, and it chips off in small bits. So putting it in the water could be an experience
