    Re-commissioning submarines

Todays tip is never leave your submarine for over 12 months unatented!

I have been that busy over the last 12 months I have not even looked at it. But having a bit of time on my hands this week thought I would get it back into commission.

I powered it up and everything still works great! Motors, planes, periscopes and piston tanks touch wood still work fine. Air tight however, thats a different story. "Like a sieve!" Springs to mind!

The bellows all needed replacing, they have all perished. The washers on the screws which keep the lid on perished, but worst of all the WTC seems to have developed a leak all of its own accord.
For some reason I dont know if it has moved or warped a little, but the WTC leaked round the front of the unit. Between the hull and the WTC.

I got the resin out a few times but to no avail. I have had to get a Dremmel and grind out some of the lead ballast, and re-seal the WTC in place. Another tip is when your old trusted Dremmel wears out, and you decide to buy a cheap one, dont be surprised if it falls to bits like mine just has. So back to Macro to buy a new Dremmel. Cant complain, the last one lasted 18 years

So now it seems to be air tight, but I think a few more pressure tests are in order! The lake is faaarrrr to cold to be swimming in it right now!

    Hi Paul.
I wondered where you had gone to... Bad news re - the sub, where do you keep it ?

The bellows on mine have lasted yrs...at least 5 yrs before any sign of deterioration...Most of mine are the Robbe type though, and I keep my subs in the house in a centrally heated bedroom.
    Nice to have you back.

    Regards sub.

    Hiya there Sub, thanks :bigthumb:

Been that busy these last months, 2 jobs, setting up my own website, building work in the house etc etc.

I keep it in the spare room, which I usefully (not that she thinks so) turned into a workshop. The bellows I use are the smaller Graupner ones. They arent graupner, just the same size. To be honest I have had them for ages, and they have went brittle. They cracked and flaked, so off they came.

I got 4 new ones from Engel, bloody amazing I got them from Germany in 2 1/2 days, and still waiting for ones to arrive from a shop in the UK!

Just pressure tested it now and it seems ( up to now) to be holding its pressure.

    Paul
