BEC Power

Anyone out there used a BEC power supply for their boat ?

Been thinking of using one instead of the reciever battery. The instructions say not to use one but I have used them on other boats and had no probs. Dont see why the typhoon should be any different ?

Any ideas ?
Paul

Hello screw loose.

Most of my boats use the RCABS method of diving so I use the separate receiver battery, only because, if my drive batts go flat for whatever reason I can still use the failsafe and " blow " the tanks where if I was BEC I would be stuffed or sunk more likely !.

But the piston tanks are failsafed to blow when the power / drive batts reach a certain low voltage arn't they ? so the failsafes should kick in prior to loosing sufficient power to " blow " the tanks, but maybe its a failsafe issue don't know, but there is loads of room for a separate receiver pack and you can get them with loads of amps these days, I would personally go belt and braces and have a separate r/c pack but thats just me, wouldn't want to loose me boat , give it a go and bench test it and see.

Regards Sub.

I wouldn't feel happy running a BEC off a 6volt main supply. You only need your main battery voltage to drop a little (even briefly when you use max throttle and operate the piston tanks at the same time) before your radio starts playing up. 12v or even 7.2v is fine though. Running a separate battery will also mean you'll be able to run the RX battery off a magnetic switch (low current). So you don't need to haul the thing out of the water everytime you want to switch off and park up for a while. Leaving the main battery on with RX battery off is fine, My TMAX board only draws 0.12 amps in this state which make no real differeance to run time if left on for a few hours.

Thanks Lads

As I said, thanks lads for the reply. I will stick to the reciever packs. I will have to get as high an amperage pack as I can get, make it last the longest.

I am using a Robbe marine handset, and the reciever is hungry for power, but the handset only lasts 20 mins at best so its not a major problem how long the reciever lasts !

Fixing in Servo's

Well nothing that Earth shattering to report this weekend. Like most I have been messing around with stupid xmas decorations and fighting through crowds in shops. Would much rather been assembling the sub !
All I have done is mount the 3 servos. There is no specific guidlines about mounting them, just the positions. Thats only so the connecting rods can reach. But easy enough to modify and make your own.

I have disposed of my old reciever batteries, which werent holding there charge very well. And bought 4 new 1.2v Ni-MH rechargables, which I am going to make into a new pack. I went for 2700 mAh batteries, just to make them last as long as possible.

The brackets for the servos are just the aluminium sheet that came with the boat, and a couple of self tappers fixing them.

The forward dive plane servo was a little more tricky to fix. Its hard to see what others on here have done, but I just used 4 long screws to fix it to the base plate, and fabricated a metal plate to attatch the microswitch for the dive plane unit. With a small round head screw going through the servo arm, and touching the plunger on the microswitch. Took a little adjusting but works ok. Might modify this arrangement at a later date.

Now wheres that poxy box of baubles !

Hello screw loose, Thanks for the update , its looking good, think you have done the right thing there old buddy, don't know if you are aware of this guy but check out his web site, www.component-shop.co.uk but he does battery packs and chargers etc, he will make any pack up for you to your specs, and he is cheaper than most too.

I got some 9 Amp Hr nimah packs for two of my boats and saved a fortune in the process.

Regards Sub.

I made the front servo mount like yours, but glued the servo directly to the metal bracket. Also my servo is mounted higher, off the PVC plate so that the servo horn is inline with the pushrod exit

Thanks mankster, I will have a look this afternoon. I must admit I was expecting bother with the pitch of the control horn. As I wasnt sure of the height of the control rod coming into the hull. Think I might make mine a little higher like yours.

Plus got a nice shiny new conning tower mechanism to play with. Sod the left over turkey, I want to get on with the boat
