Here I will post construction pictures of my current sub built, a 1/96 scale Akula II class submarine, modelled on K-157 Veper. This is one of the current Russian attack subs and is aprox 112 m long and displaces 9000 tons submerged. Unlike my last sub the Engel Typhoon which a modified kit, this build is from an fibreglass hull and fittings only (obtained from Scaleships in Belarus) with my own dive module and running gear. At 1/96 scale she comes out at 46” LOA and 5.5” beam, a much more manageable size.
The kit cost Eur296 + shipping. Thankfully the custom guys cant read Russian because I didn't have to pay a penny in duty or VAT! The kit is available in to hull thickness 1.5.mm and 2.5 mm. I went for the 2.5mm version, which is stonger at the expense of needing a larger ballast tank.
Well here what you get, 2 hull halves and the control sufaces make up the hull parts. The fitting kit includes the masts, some resin parts, an alloy/white metal? propeller and photoetched brass sheet for detailing the limber holes etc. There is also a full size plan, some dry transfers and colour sheet for the paint scheme. There are no instructions and no details on converting to radio control. Pretty much what you'd get bought a semi kit Sirmar hull or similar.
Hi Wis, yes I was very happy with the quality of mine. I had read some complaints on the web. There are one or 2 spots that but nothing to write home about, a small amount of putty and it will disappear. There was flange all around the hull separation line on the lower hull that I will needed to trim and sand. A couple of high spots again on the edge where there must have been some resin overflow at the mold junction. Also the hull will need a bit of bracing to pull it to the right shape, but even my Typhoon had this problem. For the price, it is very good. Also very accurate to the original.
I’ve cut out the limber / ballast tank holes. As they will be containing the brass inserts, you don’t need to file all the way to the line of worry too much about neatness as they won’t be seen again. This step went much quicker than I expect and is a relief after the Typhoon hull.
Notice that the scribed lines on the sail don’t match up with the cut outs, these will need to be filled later
Thanks Wis, yes I have already had a look, already had most the pictures but ther are some nice ones. I would have liked to build her as another Akula II instead of Veper but there are too many dissimilarities, even in hull length and the shape of the conning tower.
