Talking of sadistic. The Canopies! Are you nuts.
Frame lines, what there is of them are thinner than the masking tape and rather that a propper raised frame, they are just frosted mat. One side was a tiny bit better that the other but that's not saying much.
Here is two hours worth of sodding about with tape, scalpels and way to much coffee and tobacco!
DSC_0658.JPG DSC_0659.JPG
Like on a Mossie, half the frames are only on the inside. It ain't going to happen. As it is I almost cocked up. I was just about to glue the rear machine guns in when I thought it might be better to paint them first! lol. To late for the frame in the canopy behind the pilot though. That buggers glue good and propper.
Once I get these sorted, I can nail them in place and start throwing some primer at the thing.

All looking very nice Ian. I think I would have 'bottled' the canopy and bought a mask set. So well done you.

We will see how well it's gone when the mask comes off.
Right now the primer is hardening off.
I used the Stynylrez and am basically happy, the black and grey go down great, the white one though seemed a bit splattery. Still dried flat and smooth so just a bit spotty.
I'll put a photo or two tomorrow.

Ouch with the masking!!! of the greenhouse but that looks a brill job done there.
Hope I don't come into bother within the Airfix offering
Lovely progress

As promised a couple of photos of the pre-shade.
Here's the top side; The rather fickle white atop the very easy black. Even though the white was a bit of a challenge the finish is just as good.
DSC_0660.JPG

The bottom done in Black atop Grey. Went down well and only wobbly due to a bad case of the shakes!
DSC_0661.JPG
Why the different colour's? well the top I went for a high contrast due to the dark camouflage colour's and the bottom in the low contrast due to the paler colour.

While I had the airbrush fired up I took a swing at a bit of card to try that spagetti camo. Shall we just say it was a challenge? I ended up with either a to thick a line that had enough colour to cover, or a nice thin line that was so thin a coat of paint it would take several coats to cover the camouflage colour below! That ain't going to happen! I even got to the point where the pulse in my hand was affecting the spray pattern.
I will have another go later, maybe with enamels to se if that helps. I doubt it but who knows.

laters.

So to try preserve the pre-shading a bit, I thought that I would mask up for both the colour's. So I started to mask off the areas for the darker of the two. That done I dug up some Xtracrylix RLM 70 and 71 as per the destructions. Now I am no expert on German aircraft colours and I knew that the two are close to each other. I was none the less shocked to see that they are almost the same colour. I even had to take them right to the window befor I could see the difference!
Why didn't they just paint them overall in one of them!? I found myself muttering as I thinned down the paint.
So I sprayed the 'lighter' of the two, cleaned the airbrush, (Xtracrylix dry rather fast in the brush), then peeled off the first masking.
I was rather miffed to find that the PE armour panel by the pilots position did not hold onto the Stynylrez primer as well as the tape did !
So that will need priming again befor moving on to the next colour.
Here are a couple of snapshots after the tape came off.
DSC_0662.JPG DSC_0663.JPG
There was a tiny speck of dust in the paint on the port wing, but I recon that the clearcoat and markings will take care of that.
And the pre-shade still shows through. Yeah.
I recon Monday it should be safe to put tape over the paint again and do the next colour.... Then the bottom gets a blast of blue.

Beautifully precise work Ian (you should see my attempts at pre shading , theyre wonky as hell!!) Youre right about the similarity in shade of the RLM 70/71 scheme , remember the old Airfix 1/24 Stuka , they must have been looking at black and white photos for their research and originally gave the paint scheme as all over green. A lot of these old pics show very little ,if any , distinction between the two colours. Its a similar thing today with a lot of modern grey aircraft that look uniform in colour but are actually slightly different shades - dont these Air Forces consider us poor modellers!!??

Good idea to mask both greens to keep the preshading - I think I'll nick that one. I recently tried re-preshading (is that a word?) on an RAF type, but that didn't work too well at all.

So are mine mate. I have started to use the system Barry uses. Start with the darkest primer then 'fade' the centres with the lighter one. It is actually a lot easier that trying to paint all those sodding lines!

I nicked it from Barry, Doug so fine by me. lol
I think the word you are after is Post shading...I end up doing post shade on a lot of my aircraft builds as the pre-shade often gets lost under the paint.

I masked off the 71 today and sprayed the 70. Again leaving it just while I cleaned the air brush.
Thankfully no peel offs this time and I only over cut the masking two places. Totally obvious places. Hope to be able to touch them in and hide them.
DSC_0668.JPG DSC_0669.JPG DSC_0670.JPG
The Pre-shade has worked maybe a little to well on the RLM 71 and not quite so well on the RLM 70 In natural light its not to bad and can be seen on both.
If it irritates me enough I might throw a little more 71 at it to bring it down a bit.
What do the resident Luftwaffe experts think?

Now about this spagetti camouflage.... You are all going to be so disappointed it I bottle out and don't do it. (so will I in truth). So I will take a few practice swings with the bat and see what I can come up with.
Tomorrow the undersides...Which Italeri have chosen to call the right name, Hellblau, but give it the wrong RLM number, 62. I can see a lot of unknowing beginners painting the undersides yukky grey green/blue.... Ouch. I think I will go with RLM 65

I'm really enjoying watching this build Ian. There's much for the novice to learn from. Unlike Doug, I won't be attempting pre-shading on my little Stuka - post shading is definitely the way to go!

Looks good Ian. I'm no expert but I'd throw another light coat of 71 on to even things out.

I'm no Camo expert Ian and I have never done the intricate worming camo ( which looks good in the art pic ( box art )
If I was daring to do it would it be simple to do a worm effect with white tank ( thin worms and then spray the colour in between the worms ( remove worms ) heh presto ( but I'm not that brave so I would practice a lot on pieces of card.
Ill get my coat on now ( sorry )

Regards

Robert

It's a good idea Robert, the only thing is that the worms are painted over the camo and the markings. As a way of doing it the idea is solid enough, just not for this one.

I sprayed the blue on the undersides and have given it all a coat of clear. So the next step is the markings I guess.

Photo later.

All looking very nice Ian. Now then, 'squiggles' well I can only offer support - have a go. Maybe clear coat the model first, just in case disaster recovery is needed.

Photos for my last post.
The undersides are now blue. I even managed a (sort of) soft edge up the sides.
DSC_0672.JPG
Two coats of Johnson's Klear, then the Decals went down . NOTE if you are building one of these. DO NOT put those double rails on the underside of the wings until the Decals are on! Pain in the butt otherwise.
DSC_0673.JPG
Waiting to see if they need a second go with the Micro sol befor a second run with the Klear.

(hmm nothing like bright sunlight for making things look a lot worse than the actually are).

Need to paint the exhaust covers and make them look a bit burned. Not 100% but I think they where steel, possibly stainless.
Also any one know what the duck walks on the wings where made of? Wood or Metal?
Then it is can of worms time. maybe.

Looking like a nice stuka mate. Should be interesting to see the camo come along now.
