Eduard do some nice 1/32 bombs that will fit the Tornado. I think they are the right type. American laser guided, but carried by NATO aircraft as well. I'm sure someone will tell me if they are wrong!.

Hi Guys
Got a couple of questions with regards to the various builds.
How many 1/32 Tornados are in this GB?
Of those, how many will be Op Granby ie. The first Gulf War?
If we end up with 6 desert yellow Tonkas it doesn't really matter, I'm just curious!
Cheers
P

I have a 1/32 tornado which definitely won't be a desert bird.

As per previous discussion on this on another thread I thought a year would be long enough for this with all the aftermarket you want to spend on it. I can only think of one thing to insist on and it's that your Tornado carries a full and impressive weapons load whether it is the ADV or IDS version. There is plenty of time before the start date so if any members have ideas they want to throw into the hat then please do, I would like to have a healthy Q&A if necessary before we settle on a final set of guidelines.

I have two 1/72 Tornado IDS/GR.1 A year is great for me, no pressure with work etc, and might even sneak both out.

F3's in the gulf...?
I have a wish to do the big three, Tonka, brick and a Jag. (only the Tonka for this build though). However, the Tornado I have is an F3 so I am not so sure if its the right type.
Are the differences air-frame, avionics or both?

According to the RAF website Ian, F3's were deployed but I don't think I've ever seen them in anything other than the grey air defence scheme. The GR1 is the usual Tornado variant seen in the familiar desert scheme.

https://www.raf.mod.uk/history/AirPowerintheGulfWar.cfm

Here you can see your line up:tor1-Operation-Granby-RAF-Tornado-F3-1990.jpg

Jaguar, Tornado GR1, Buccaneer, Tornado F3 during Operation Granby.

The F3/ADV Tornado was visually different from the GR1/4. It's longer for a start, different nose profile, avionics are bound to be different

The Tornado F3 was the air defence variant. With a longer nose and armed with 4 sidewinders and 4 skyflash missiles. Plus it had only one Mauser cannon on the right hand side of the nose as opposed to the GR1/4 which has 1 eah side. The RAF sent 18 . These were used for combat air patrols over land. I was civilian ground crew during the first gulf war on Saudi no.29 sqdn Tornado F3's. We had 12 aircraft with serial no.s from 2901 to 2912 inclusive. Plus some aircraft attached to us from the othe Saudi F3 sqdn normally based at khamis Mushayt. Dont know what squadron the RAF Kites were from. So if i get the new 1/48 Revell F3 for christmas, i will be doing it as a Saudi machine as well,

Crikey! You swan off to the Baltics for a few days and everybody is getting all frothy about your GB suggestion. Not that I'm complaining, it's great to see so much interest with a well aimed subject - I am fortunate that three topics I have put forward have provoked such a response (Phantom, Mig-21 and now the Tornado).
Maybe it is time to formalise some rules for the GB (there are more than two months to the start so still time for tweaking).

Thanks to everyone who is taking part in this GB.

Here are the rules.
1. The subject is the Panavia Tornado.
2. The GB will run from 1st January 2018 for one calendar year.
3. Participants can enter more than one model.
4. Any scale, Mark, Air Force or kit maker is permitted.
5. Photos of the box lid, sprues, decal sheet and any aftermarket bits should be posted in the thread. If the builder has a reference photo that they are working to that should be included.
6. The model can be posed in flight, on a simple base, a vignette or diorama (no cluttered workbenches for the final show please).
7. Scratch built additions, aftermarket parts, super detailing, what-ifs or home made decals are permitted.
8. Participants can join in at any time during the GB.
9. A full compliment of weapons is mandatory - no clean wing builds please.
10. Enjoy the build.

You can post photos of your planned kits here if you wish but cometh Hogmanay (or a few days before or after your hangover) your box lids and sprue shots must runneth over.

Please feel free to ask, debate, share, encourage and compliment where appropriate.

Thanks again.
