Hi all

So now my Bf 110 is nearing the home straight (more about that later), I'm starting to think about my build for Simon's GB.

I didn't know Simon, although he was kind enough to comment on a few of my builds. I have seen from more than a few posts that he was always encouraging people to push themselves and so I will be doing it with this in a number of ways:
  • My first vignette.
  • Only my 2nd 1/35 AFV (not that I've finished the other one!)
  • My first 1/35 figures.
  • My first North African subject matter.
  • My first individual link tracks.
  • Plus a bit of hacking about of the base kit thanks to info from Jakko.
  • Metal replacement barrels (I've done them plenty of times in 1/72 but not at that this scale).

The core of the base will be made from some polystyrene packaging the previous owners left in the loft as well as some expanding foam.

I've also got some 1/35 stowage on order as I figured that my 1/72 stuff might be on the small side!! ;)

It will be a week or so before I begin this, assuming the 110 goes as planned.

I think that was my first Tamiya kit..... about 45 years ago! Seemed really good and highly detailed to me back then. Good luck with your project. I will be skulking at the back somewhere.

Hi Andrew, Looks like an interesting project, I'm in.
Thanks guys. I'll try not disappoint, although I'm not noted for my fast builds!!

Nick, 45 years ago. It was a new kit at the time. I think release was c. 1970/71!!

I'd better find me a bit of room on the front row (Two meters apart please!) to watch this - Before there is none!

Thanks Ron. And glad you've joined, given the limited space enforced on me by social distancing restrictions!!

Hi all

So a very productive afternoon yesterday, whilst my wife was out.

Hull bottom assembly largely finished and holes all filled in using cuts from the figure bases that come with the kit and a bit of filler. Wheel assembly also finished too.

I've also hacked off the offending storage box from the rear left hand track cover, which Jakko pointed out was a non standard modification on a captured Pz II. All I've got to do now is fill the hole..... :fearful:

All went well and only error was my fault as I wasn't paying attention but it was easily fixed.

It's been nice to work on something a bit bigger than my usual 1/72.

Hopefully I'll get the turret and hull upper finished today.

A big thanks goes out to Steve Jones for providing a whole heap of reference material on Panzer IIs. :thumb2::thumb2:

ACW as usual

Hi Andrew
Nice start. Always nice to get the boring bits - filling and chopping off - and the wheels sorted.

Nice start Andrew, don’t close your curtains I’m stood outside watching, as there’s no room left inside.
Great start upgrading this p;d kit Andrew. Braver man than I.
Andrew,
A great start.

Thanks gents, the support is much appreciated!!

Ian - I'm sure we can find some room! If not I'll warn the family to expect that there will be someone outsite lurking in the bushes! ;):smiling5:

Peter - to be honest there was more than one occasion as I hacked it off when I thought about whether or not I had made the right call but it came out ok in the end.

Hi all

So the main construction is largely finished, aside from the large hole and the few bits and pieces that I've left off for easier painting. It's sooooo much bigger than I'm used to as well - it almost looks rather daunting.....:cold-sweat:

I'm really glad I decided to splash out on the metal barrels as they're so much better then the kit versions. That said these Aber ones are about twice the price of the RB Models ones but I had to settle for these as I couldn't find the RBM MG34 barrel anywhere not even their own site.

ACW as usual.

Those barrels are very nice and add to the build, bring on the paint.
Nicely done Andrew.Barrels really add something to the old girl.
Rich.

Paul, Richard

Thanks for the support and you're right the barrels do look good. Just a shame they cost about the same price as the kit (if not a little bit more)......:sleeping2::sleeping2::tired:...hence me trying source the RB Models ones!

Paul - the paint will be a way off yet. I need to fill that gaping hole and also blank off some gaps in the underside of the hull top.
