While waiting for paint to harden then discovering I have run out of flat black the bench would be empty for at least three days. That will not do, so...

Very clean mouldings with no obvious flash and very well detailed small parts.

I think this will be a very interesting build.

Nice, I've done the truck version of this zil, quite a few chassis bits but nicely detailed and went together well.

The many small chassis parts went together well, very little clean up needed and they all fit as they should.

No need to put any paint detail on the engine as it will not be seen under the cab.
Axles and wheels ready, the instructions call for the wheels to be glued on at this stage but I will just use them to make sure they all contact the ground when fitting the axles as it will be much easier to paint them later.

One thing I will say is with a model that has so many small parts the Dspiae nippers I bought make life easy as they cut so close sometimes there is no clean up needed and the parts just fall off the sprue making the risk of feeding the carpet monster very small indeed, they were expensive but in my opinion they are worth their weight in gold.

I got a fair bit of assembly done today.
51260439145_028ec6aed5_b.jpg
And a dry test fit to give me an idea if it was all going OK.
51259400221_6b8fb94ed2_b.jpg
This showed up the only slight problem I have found with the kit so far. The shaft running along the top of the chassis to drive the water pump is supposed to pass through a hole in the inside rear panel of the tank.
51258670872_047551649f_b.jpg
The hole in the wall is not large enough for the universal joint to go through so I had to open it up a bit.
51259399961_ccf649725a_3k.jpg
Now it is all OK, I know I could have just cut it off as it will never be seen but what else does a man do on a Sunday afternoon? :smiling2:
Just proves that dry fitting everything is not just a waste of time, all the bits shown are now primed ready to paint.

Andy,
Looking good mate. it seems to be a basic oversight.
I think so Paul as this is a very good well thought out kit but the instructions seem to have missed that bit although they would have you build the tank on to the chassis starting with the floor, so if you did it that way it might be more obvious but I, like many others prefer to build as many sub assemblies as possible before the final build.

Andy,
I once designed an auxiliary drive for an alternator on a diesel - it took me several days & I was quite proud of it, until my boss quietly asked how I proposed to fit or change the drive belt, without disassembling the gearbox/clutch assembly - I was still new to the job & it taught me a lesson! & it took quite a while to live it down. It was suggested that the fitting instructions included the line "..........and then a miracle occurs"

I now have the main colour on the cab, roof is just a loose fit.
51302083055_cb3d40ff8e_b.jpg
Last look inside as it will never be seen, no steering wheel fitted as I am using foam as masking and it would likely get broken off so I will fit it before the roof goes on permanently.
51302083005_70f2565045_b.jpg
Now I need to mask it as both front doors are white and the rear doors and the bonnet have white strips on them, I can imagine how easy that will be. ;)

Well that turned out a bit better than I expected, not perfect but it will do for me. Needs a wee touch up here and there but the step gets painted black so that will take care of the door bottom.

Still got a lot to learn about fiddly masking though.

Looks good to me, time you got the screen in up to that front edge it'll be spot on mate.

Andy,
I must admit that I would have painted the doors white, then masked them up & sprayed red overall, but your way seems just as successful!

I did think about that Dave but the door hinges protrude a bit and I figured there was a better chance of getting it right if I masked around the doors instead of trying to cover the hinges properly. The rear section has flat sides so it has already been painted white and 5mm masking tape will be on before the red top coat.

As we have had a bit of rain the last couple of days my attic workroom has cooled down enough for me to get a bit done. Cab and rear section all painted up and the picture shows a dry fit as there are a few more small parts and decals to add before the final assembly.

Hopefully it will not be long now.
