Great work Neil.
looking at the painting and details the Grey could be whatever you want! Gold braid for officers and yellow for troopers and NCOs (changed from white lace in 1812).
He seems to be missing canteen and haversack and also the sabretache. The outer seam of the overall trousers should be blue.
no idea what that is on his left sleeve!
Jon.

By the way here's a pic of a French cuirassier's helmet.I think this is a second empire example but it's got to be similar. I'd say you've got it bang on.

That's fantastic ,Jon, Thank you!
and thanks for the uniform info too- I think I'll make him an officer as he's kind of rallying the troops behind him- even though he's not the first in the whole picture.
cheers
Neil

Right, it’s time to look at the Flying Scotsman!

crop 3.jpg

Apart from the regimental braid the arms from the kit are more or less fine. I’ll have to change the right hand but that’s ok.

The legs, of course will be a bit more trouble. No to mention the kilt!

There were some very bad sink marks on the upper legs so I decided to junk them altogether
IMG_20191128_200820285.jpg

They will be covered by the kilt anyway, and I think it will be simpler to sculpt them from scratch.

So I surgerised them and inserted the obligatory copper wire, which will be tweaked later

I enlisted the help of my new surgeon’s assistant, Bob.

I carved away the regimental lace from his chest as well-he looks as if he’s doing the sword dance at the moment.

So it’s out with the Milliput tonight.

Stay tuned , folks!

Neil

Amazing work Neil. Having the confidence to hack the figures about is something I'm in envy of.

Hi Neil
Cracking job. The pose you're creating will certainly have more life. Like Peter I really admire your skill and confidence to hack a figure about.

Steve, Jim, Tony, Scottie,
Thanks very much , I'm really glad you're enjoying it.
I'm actually getting a bit 'surgeried out' - I need to get some paint on something soon.
As soon as I'm happy with the composition I'm going to concentrate on the Cuirassier and get him ready for paint.
Hopefully I'll get some bench time this evening

Ian and Peter, thank you.
So, as promised , here comes the Milliput!

Over the years I have found it well-nigh impossible to balance the quantities in a very small amount of Milliput correctly so I don’t bother any more. I always wait until I have a few things to do to justify a larger mix – hence the variety of little jobs in this post.
First up are the highlander’s arms.
arms.jpg
I split the coat tails so they can fly a bit .

Next came the main event- the legs.
With a previous mix I had roughly coated the wire with Milliput to provide a key for the sculpting
IMG_20191203_195743534.jpg

I find otherwise the putty just slips around the wire making it impossible to keep it in place to do the actual sculpting. I’ve straightened his right toe as well.

You’ll notice the finish on the legs is a bit iffy, but as I’ve said before, I envy people who can model correctly right off the bat- I have to be thereabouts with the Milliput and finish off with filing and carving and sanding. Most of this will be covered by the kilt, anyway.

The painting shows socks with no gaiters, and I don’t know whether it is correct but I’m sticking with the gaiters.

The Scots Grey’s left arm was next

The Cuirassier’s helmet tail

His epaulettes
IMG_20191203_194927591.jpg
I flattened the portmanteau and re-sculpted the cloak where it would be squashed by the weight of the horse - I was grateful to Bob for his assistance
IMG_20191203_194858362.jpg
I made new coat tails, using the existing ones as a template.
IMG_20191203_210719187.jpg
You have to a wait until the end of a session to do this kind of thing as you need the Milliput to be more cured and therefore less sticky or likely to break up.
IMG_20191203_215230213.jpg
So that’s where we are currently.

Thanks for looking in and for the encouraging comments

Neil

Andy has one of those minds Neil!

More fine work, and it's good to see someone using good old Milliput. I also like working with it (n a limited way).
