A Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina was going to be another german plane but hey ho..

Well I did have the choice of another German plane but decided to have a crack at this airfix Catalina. It is the worst kit I have bought in terms of quality the moldings are very rough and the pilots look like they have been in John Carpenters The Thing! Any way I have made a start on it and beginning to enjoy it despite the poor quality of the kit. I was amazed at how big the wing span is on this one bigger then my B17 that I made a while back.

A blast from the past. I built this as a kid. It will be nice to see the old Airfix built again.

Look forward to seeing this one develop Mark. Yes, some of those older Airfix kits can be very rough indeed, but getting a good result in the end is quite a satisfactory achievement.

Also I took my larger models to my local photographers shop as he is a keen model maker and he took this great photo of my B17 in his window. He has got the B17 A10 Worthog and Lancaster hanging up in the window I thought it would be a good place for them to be on display and encourage others to take up scale modeling again.

Hi Mark great aircraft I rate it very highly. Finished one about 3 months ago. Looks really nice on the shelf.

Cheated a bit as I had the floats down & the wheels down. But have seen lots of pictures in that attitude.

Be interested to see what livery it is finished in.

Looking nice Mark, you're making an old kit look very good.

BTW how did your photographer manage to get that prop blur effect on the B-17, its great.

Tony.

Thanks Tony its coming along nicely now, the photo of the b17 was retouched up in photo shop and radial blur applied to the propellers. Think I will get him to photograph all my models he is a professional photographer by trade so not surprising he did such a nice shot.

Ok I think this one can be called almost done now just got a couple of little bits to tidy up but pretty much finished. Build time was about a week I guess mybe less not really counting. Now I have completed it I have to say it has won me over and I really like it. Plus its a big plane and will look great hanging from my bedroom ceiling. It was pretty rough on the moldings and those back windows were tricky to put together but its been rewarding to keep at it and get it done. The decals were few but in good condition only gripe would be that the cockpit had no real detail which was a shame for such a big plane. Hope to make this again but next time with the Revell kit. Got a few little bits to touch up tomorrow but here are the pics, tried to get it to look like the box art as best I could.:plane: Hope you like it.

Thanks Andrew and Joe, he he yes I have to be quick got so many other things going on would never get these model finished if I did not crack on with them. I am chairman of the Norfolk Broads Angling Strategy group and leader of the Halesworth U3A Astronomy group so I am kept quite busy with all of those. When the weather is grotty and I cant go out star gazing in the evening then its great to be able to relax making a model or two. The Cat looks nice with my other planes I am building up quite a collection of them now. Back to the German planes for my next build and a nice little Focke Wulf Fw189 Airfix kit 1:72 scale to complete.

You've made a great job of that old kit.The canopy frame lines look really good.Something that requires a lot of patience and is not easy to do well.If you like the Cat you should build the Revell/Monogram 1/48 kit.The wing span is huge and there's plenty of cockpit detail to keep you happy.

Thanks Dave. The canopy's where hard to do there was no guide lines to work from so I did each line individually with two strips of tamiya tape peeled it off, let it dry then did the next line and hand painted each one. The Revell kits looks good will have to get one for my stash.
