I think of myself as more of a painter than a modeller, however I have found a new way for me at least to combine the two. I am a big fan of wooden sailing ships and the artists who portrayed these magnificent vessels throughout history. I recently decided to make my own copies of some pictures that I particularly like.

I then decided to make my own "period" picture so I had already built a model of HMS Unicorn and a couple of years ago we sailed my friend's catamaran around the coast of Spain so I had loads of seascape photos. Combining the model and the photos I came up with this picture of Unicorn off the coast of Portugal.

Thanks for indulging me with what is not really a modelling post.

Hi John.
These are beautiful paintings and show the skill you have in your use of colours. :smiling3:
I wish I had the talent to do something like this.

John, I think you are on to something. What if you were to do a partial build of the model and position it on your working surface of the painting so it actually becomes part of the intended scene. Sort of a multidimensional image. Might be worth a go, let me know what you think? Cheers, Rick H.

ps. Lovely work, are they done in oils?

Very nice work. A brooding storm. The ship on it's own with just top sails in use.
Just waiting. Your painting shows it all John. A great portrail of mood.

Great art work & the detail such as the rigging on the ship superb.

Gentlemen

I really appreciate all your kind words and for indulging my little, not strictly modelling, incursion. Your generosity is only matched by your individual modelling skills.

Thanks
John

Wonderful paintings John. They have a good mood about them.

As you said not really modelling, so I moved them her to the chat section of the ship yard . Feel free to post more of them.
