Academy 1/35 AH1-z Viper 'Shark Mouth'

Managed to grab one of these kits from Wonderland Models, who kindly brought it to Fairford Airshow for me to collect. These kits seem to be rarer than 'hens teeth' for some reason and are going for silly money on eBay.
I was a bit surprised by the size of the box, as it initially looks quite small, and i had to double check it was 1/35th scale;

but as soon as the box is opened and you see the forward fuselage halves you are in no doubt over its scale.

20190724_192157.jpg

Instructions come on an A4 foldout sheet in black and white with a second 'manual' as Academy call it showing all the paint schemes, along with the stencil data placements. Finishing off the package is a small sheet of etch for the various grills on the Helicopter

Putting the main fuselage parts together showed no problems, however the tail boom, a beautifully rendered slide molding, seems to be a 'butt' joint with very small locating tabs to join onto the forward fuselage, similar to the tail rotor to tail boom so i will be adding small plastic tabs to aid in joining these parts together.

Its a large bird at just over 16cm in length and the whole body is full of sharp details, even down to the hinges on panels;

The biggest omission though is no belts for the seats, with such a large and clear canopy its just not going to look right, so what to do; well i could purchase Eduards 1/35 AH1-W interior set , but that would leave virtually everything on the etch fret as totally different instrumentation or i could get Def.Models Viper Crew and Belts which then gives the option of a crewed bird or one waiting for the crew, but thinking of building this one on a carrier deck, prior to start up with the canopies open so think the crew would work okay with the way they are moulded.

YouTube clips show they only close the canopies when the blades are spun up;

And would use the un-visored head for the pilot;

Watching this one Steve. Just watch some of the instructions, the parts call out, some are wrong.

Looks good Steve. 1/35 is a bit of an oddball scale, not seen many aircraft in that scale

Great ! :confounded:, so far no issues. :smiling2:

I suppose the reasoning behind academy's decision for this scale is it can be put with modern armour to create dio's

After an hour of cutting,sanding and a bit of gluing you get to a point where the cockpit is complete;

Pilots display, modified ready for the Cobra pilot set from Def. Models;

Gunners station;

All together;

The seats, Pilots Display units are not glued in at the moment, to make them easier to paint and ensure the cockpit gets a good coat of paint. Only problematic area, and that's only because its fiddly, was the fixing of the two parts of the hose, seen in the gunners station.

Had a thought as well, with the pilots, as they are 1/35 I am sure i can find some plastic figures with arms that will fit my idea better. lol

1:35 scale helicopters have been around since the 1970s (by Heller, back then) and got a revival in the ’90s with Dragon and then mainly Academy. I think the idea is to have them appeal to military modellers rather than aircraft modellers.

Hi Steve
I'm definitely in for this. A real box full of bits. Looks a nicely detailed kit and the cockpit has gone together nicely. Good luck finding arms for the figures - hope you have something suitable.

Got the cockpit painted, went with tamiya Nato Black as isnt as dark as flat black and has a bit of a worn look to start with. Medium highlights in german grey and highlights in vallejo grey. Buttons switches and knobs touched in with vallejo ivory, red tamiya clear green. And then highpoints highlighted with mig metallic pigments. Just noticed the large green and red circles should be gloss black as they are air vents ! I have found some 1/32 cockpit decals which i can cut down to fit the MFD's from Airscale, As I cant leave the MFD's blank when its cewed.
So a stop until i get the decals, replacement gun. Heres where i am at ;

Find a picture of the cockpit with the displays on, cut them out and scale them in a graphics program, then print out and paste into the model.

This one for example (though the reflection of the camera flash is rather visible):

If you can tell me how big the displays are on your model, it’s very little work to cut them out from the image, scale them, and post them here for you :smiling3:

Replacement gun? Is the given poor or wrong? German Marines? Didn't know they had assault ships. Will that be the carrier deck you refer to? Excellent choice of model-looks great. PaulE
