Hi all

So the 'wingy thing' contagion has clearly struck.:smiling5:

I actually started this as I was was working on my Dogfight Doubles and have almost got it to the point were it's ready for primer.

This kit is 3 years older than me (1967 'New' tool) and although it's not the original box art, the box still predates my birth. I picked this up cheap at a small model show a couple of years ago and decided to give it a whirl.

I am not going to through any AM parts at it given how cheap it was. It is entirely intended to be a practice piece to improve my AB skills on planes following my first attempt on the Spitfire and 109. It will then go on display in Junior's room

The kit itself is very basic. The only interior is the pilot and read gunner, the rear MG, the pilot's seat (the gunner doesn't even get one of those) and some decal instrument panels.

That said it actually went together nicely. Plastic was not soft and no flash or major fit issues to speak of. The only real issue were several pin marks on the tail plane pieces (I'm deliberately ignoring the raised panel lines). What I was very impressed with was how fine almost all of the attachment points were for such an old kit - modern model companies take note!

The instructions are somewhat limited though and so I had to take a peak at or two at the instructions for the Eduard 110s I have in the stash.

PS I do now understand why AM canopy masks are so popular!! It was first time going masks of this number and it was made quite tricky by how fine the canopy lines were. Please be gentle....... :cold-sweat:

Andrew. I dug my old Monogram 1/72 Bf-110E out the other day while visiting the Drennen vintage vault. I think yours looks fine and these old kits are good practice. I plan on building mine and maybe put it in a diorama. Your figs look great also I’ll be seated and watching.

Thanks Lee.

As you say perfect for practicing on. And I need a lot of practice before I tackle the three Eduard 110s I have in the stash. Two are profipacks so I really don't want to mess them up.

You are more than welcome to have a seat on the front row but I suggest you use one of those cheap plastic throw away rain Macs you see at cricket and tennis. As you're aware, the airbrushing doesn't always go quite to plan!!

Hi Andrew
Are Monogram still going or have they gone by the wayside? Over 50 years old and built at last. They even give you a stand if you decide not to hang it from the bedroom ceiling :tongue-out3:

Hi all

So I managed to get some paint on at the weekend.

The bombs received a coat of dark green in line with this article I found online. Ironically it is very close to the colour of the kit plastic but will be given some added yellow markings as per the below photo (courtesy of Steve aka Stona).

I also did the yellow wing tips, tail plane and fuselage yellow letter band. I followed the kit instructions rather than an artists impression I found as a photo from the actual squadron showed another plane with the yellow tail plane, unlike the artists impression.

In terms of the paintwork I didn't try highlighting the panel lines as they're raised. So instead I tried a technique called black-basing I came across very recently, to give it a used/weathered effect. For the uninitiated, you give a the primer a blotchy/swirly coat of the main colour that does not cover the primer properly. You then give it an even coat of the main paint and you're hopefully left with a worn looking finish.

It's the first time I've tried it and I think it's worked okay but please let me know if you thinks it's still a bit too heavy.

ACW as usual.

Hi Jim

I don't think so. I found references to a merger with Revell. And that the merged company was eventually bought by Hobbico who marketed it under the Revell name but they went bust a few years ago. I I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that the two arms of Revell split into separate US and German companies for a while but that Hobbico reunited them until they went bust. I believe the failed Hobbico was then bought out by else.

And yes I will be using the stand!

Ps just found this to be answer your question - all caveats apply - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revell

Hi all

Apologies for not being around much. Very little time for the forum this week.

I managed to get the bombs, props and splinter camo done at the weekend.

Although it's not obvious the yellow coat on the bombs isn't perfect as from what I've seen it was seems to have been roughly applied sometimes.

The splinter camo is done but I was aiming for a soft edge rather than a hard one as per Steve's (aka Stona) suggestion (pic below). The plan didn't work as I was hoping so I might have a go at doing the soft edge free-hand. The green is looking a bit thin because I was trying to aim for a warn/weathered look but it looks a bit too thin in places. You'll also notice my paint pattern is the reverse of the one below, as you can see dark paint on the engine cowlings (again something Steve picked up).

I still have to do the blotches on the side.

PS sorry for the slightly blurry pic and lighting. They were taken in a rush.
