Nice rendition of the splinter cam. Don’t worry too much about the soft edges, this is 1/72 so it wouldn’t be very noticeable anyway.
Thanks Tim!

Hi all

So I got a bit more done at the weekend.

Against my better judgement (and everyone else's) I had a go at soft edges. I really struggled to get it as tight as I liked and also covered a bit more of the RLM02 than intended. Also struggled with the blotches too.....I just really struggled to get the pressure/mix combo right for some reason.....but at least that's something else new I've had a go at.

The exhausts were done using my own patented 'metal and rust technique' as described here. I also made some home made masks for the underwing plane ID letters - first time I've tried it. One came out better than the other but at least they're on the underside and so won't be seen too much.

I also mounted the bombs and managed to get the gloss varnish and the decals on too.

The decals are pretty thick, the printing was not the finest and they had a lot of extra carrier film that needed trimming but went down okay(ish) - my main worry was that at 50+ years old they would disintegrate but they held up fine. Being so thick they do stand a little bit proud but as this is a basically a practice piece I'm not that worried.

ACW as usual

Apologies for the slightly blurry pic below too....the camera focussed on the mug in the background for some reason.....

Hi all

So other than having to stick on the small sticky out bits and pieces that ask to get broken off during construction and painting, removing the canopy mask, gluing the base on and adding the aerial wires, this is done.

I finished off with an attempt (not that successful) to do some exhaust muck on the wings and then an overall wash of a mix of darkish grey and sepia vallejo washes. I added a bit too much sepia in hindsight making it browner than I wanted and is also a bit heavy on the underside (but not as dark as it looks) but that's all part of the learning process.

The base has come out a lot more mottled and blue than it appears in the pics and gives quite a good sky effect IMHO, much better than my base for my 109 & Spit Dogfight Doubles

Hi all

So I was hoping to have this finished yesterday but the stand proved problematic and would not hold the plane on properly. So I had to rip it out and add a bit of reinforcement late last night, which seems to have worked. As you'll see the reinforcement needs some tidying up....

In putting the stand together I bent it slightly after putting it in boiling water and it also has a slight nose down attitude, meaning it looks like it's in a gentle downwards left hand turn - which hopefully looks a bit more dynamic than the level flight the stand would have it in. It also means you get a better view of the plane.

The canopy mask came out really well considering it was my first time doing it on so many panes. It does need a slight touch up in one place where I goofed on removing it...:crying:

Next up are the aerial wires and we're all done!

ACW as usual.

Thanks Steven. I'm pretty happy with it in the whole. You've got to start somewhere with something new.

Ok guys, so this is finished.

I used fishing line as before for the aerial wires. The 4lb breaking strain I used previously was too thick at this scale, so I used some 2lb breaking strain instead but that is basically transparent. I therefore gave it a thin coat of black primer.

Below is a taster but more pics will follow on a 'completed' thread.

Hi Andrew
Well you have certainly done this old kit credit. It looks great thanks largely to a really nice paint job and your skill and patience.

Gents, thanks you very much for your feedback. It turned out ok in the end I think, accepting that there is always room for improvement!!
