Hi all

So having got juices flowing with the completion of the Crusader AA but not yet having the opportunity to get the AB out yet - roll on next week - and having a couple of days off either side of the weekend, I thought I would add to the pile of things that needed to see some paint.

This depicts a prototype that the Canadians apparently only made one of. As I'll be using this for Junior's Brit forces I've dispensed with the rocket launchers. As usual I've used a metal barrel to minimise the risk of snapping in our battles

It's been an interesting if frustrating build at times for the following reasons:

Pros

  • On the whole nicely detailed, with a pretty full interior if that's your thing (not mine though) - engines x2, seats, steering wheel and nicely done gun breach.
  • Good moulding with minimal flash, apart from the turret basket.
  • It feels nice and solid once built.

Cons

  • Stupidly over engineered IMHO - 120+ pieces. There were a number of occasions when something used three or four pieces when one would have sufficed, sometimes leading to seams/joins in odd places. As an example, the engine had 11 pieces and the gun plus turret front was also made up of 11!!
  • Best detail hidden. I personally don't go for interiors but even if I did, fully opened up most of it would still be hidden. The gun breach being the best/worst example, with only the very end visible from the turret hatches.
  • The way the gun is mounted meant I found impossible to glue the mounting brackets in place without gluing the gun in place too and so it can't be elevated.
    :(
  • Instructions - although they weren't too bad on the whole, they did occasionally call out for wrong/non-existent parts and weren't always clear on where items should be fitted.
  • Poor fit and gapping in a number of places (I still have to fill these). The engine/crew compartment bulkhead was too tall and stopped the hull roof fitting without some sanding and scraping....oh and the bow machine gun position meant it was impossible to put the headlights in the right place....oh and look at the hull above the rear left hand wheel.....
  • Despite the good interior detail, external detail was poor or even missing in some places - the worst culprit being the turret mounted AA machine gun which is awful.
  • Locating points missing/unclear on the exterior, so it was sometimes a bit of guess work on where major parts were meant to go.

I've probably made it sound worse than it is but I'll let you be the judges!

As you'll also see form the last picture it wasn't a small vehicle either!!

ATB and ACW as usual.

Andrew

Hi Andy,
Despite the issues you described it has turned out well. The last picture does show how big this vehicle was. I built one in 1/35 and thought at the time that it was big.

Thanks Paul for stopping by and the support. It's much appreciated. I've taken a couple more pictures of the comparative scale as the above shot didn't do it justice due to the angle I took it at.

Thanks again.

Hi all

So I filled in the gaps I mentioned above and added thin strips of stryene on top of the hull sides to bring them level with the top, and after finding some shots on the excellent War Wheels website (link HERE) tweaked the exhaust and added some 0.3mm rod to each side as below.

After that it was one of the kits that was primed in my mass priming session (link HERE)

The wheels have been primed black as it makes it easier to do the tires later on.

ACW as usual.

Andrew

The effect I was trying to achieve with the thin rod.
You can just about make it out in the second picture below.

Steve - Thank you very much. You are too kind! Andrew

All

As requested by Steve this has been covered in my take on SSC15 as part of my mass AB session, although the photos don't quite capture it properly.

ACW as usual.

Thanks Steven! I think I'll have a go at drilling out the smoke mortars to better improve things

Stay safe too.

Hi all

As with the Daimler Armoured Car, this is marked up as belonging to the Inns of Court Recce Regiment. I had to be a bit creative with their placement due to the location of the stowage bins. Wheels also added.

Exhausts done with Life Color Rust and Dust set.

Next up weathering and a bit of stowage.

ACW as usual.
