Thanks for the comments guys, I am probably making it hard for myself but I dislike having to try and paint a fully built model if I can help it. Been looking for info on colour schemes as the ones in the kit are a bit bland to be honest but I think I may have found something that will look good but will also give me a headache trying to get it right.

Hi Andy,

Late to the party as usual, but you are doing a bang up job on this so far. As for a paint scheme, it's your model and as long as you are having fun, you won't get a headache Sir!!! Just enjoy yourself, that's what counts!!!

I wouldn’t call painting a model like this in subassemblies “making it hard on yourself” — I consider it the sensible way to do it, else you’ll never get paint into all the areas you will still be able to see :smiling3:

The cab went together well.

And it all fits together properly.

It seems I was worrying about nothing as I can still fit the engine/gearbox and radiator with the cab fitted to the chassis.

Just a few bits to fit to the cab and then it will be time for paint I reckon.

A very tidy fit. The engine is looking the DBs. Lovely work all round

Thanks Steve, there are a few bits of pipework still to go on the engine after it is finally fitted, some of them may be a bit tricky but I have plenty of time to work it out.

First stage of paint done, now I only need to mask the bits twice to hopefully get the look I want.

On looking at the engine it would seem I need to straighten that turbo a wee bit.

But then nobody would see it with the bonnet shut, except I would know it's not right.

Hi Andy - is it meant to have a chrome engine or is that just artistic licence? Seems a bit bling for a military truck

Apparently, this is what it looks like on a camouflage-painted military Ural 4320:

A coat of thinned Tamiya Smoke over the model engine followed by one of matt varnish should replicate that well enough, I think.

Yes, I know it looks a bit shiny but as Jacko says it could be dulled down a bit but as the bonnet will not be displayed open I am not bothered.

Andy, sorry even later than Allen aka Dude 1.
Congratulations on a brilliant build.Looking good, waiting for the paint :nerd:

My first kit when I came back to modelling was a Zevzda T 34 and have fond memories of building it.

How do you think I feel, I do it for a living then come home and do the same :smiling5:
Heh … I remember a teacher in school once talking about how he had made his hobby into his job. My best friend at the time then remarked that he wouldn’t want to do that because, “Then when you get home, you’re still doing the same thing.” (He joined the Navy a few years later, even though I’d never seen him express any interest in sailing or ships before, so I guess he followed his philosophy.)

Second layer of paint on tonight, takes ages to mask and I still have more to do.

I hope to get the last of the paint on tomorrow along with a few bits that are still to be fitted but that may change according to how I feel, or if I go for a walk, although according to the nice letter I got today from the NHS I am on the endangered species list and should stay in the house for 12 weeks..................yeah right!

This build is almost finished now except for a couple of bits still to go on.

The front exhaust/silencer is to fit and all the windows but I can not fit the clear parts until I flat clearcoat the model.
Spare wheel carrier hinges out, bit of a pain to do that as you need to build it around the wheel as it would not fit in otherwise.

I may even be brave enough to throw some washes and pigments at it when they come, on the other hand I think it looks OK clean.

Andy,
if you don't want to 'dirty up' - the Russians have a standard 'parade' finish - mainly white edges to the bodywork1024px-Russian_BM-21_Grad_in_Saint_Petersburg.JPG
The white rims on the tyres may be a bit tricky, though................................
