Bob's Tamiya 1/35 Stug IV

Here is my second entry into this GB

Build Plan

I will be building the Tamiya Stug IV, without the side armour plating, the rest of it will pretty much be OOB. As for a colour scheme, I am trying to look for something basic, and not in sand colour, but most of the schemes I find all seem to have some form of camouflage pattern. Will do some more research into that. The tank will be preshaded then painted and finally very lightly weathered, once again I am going for a clean look as thats how I prefer my models.

Another golden oldie Bob! If you can, change the supplied tracks coz they're pretty bad. Some Dragon Magic Tracks would fit.

You'll struggle to find a scheme that doesn't have a camo pattern. The StuG IV was introduced after the Germans went with the 1943 Dunkelgelb base & olivegrün/rotbraun combination.

Thanks Patrick, I found the tracks but their a bit expensive for me, especially when I bought this kit for less than half the price of the tracks

Found this site that shows two with camo that is not showing the sand base colour if it gives you nay ideas

Thanks loads for the link Richard, Im going to go with the desert yellow and red brown camo scheme,

Here is my first build update.

That's it for this one, will complete the upper hull tomorrow, I will leave off the tools till the end, as they will be painted separately.

My thoughts about this tank are that it is very strange looking, but tactically very clever; as it is very low to the ground, thus making it a smaller and hence harder target.

I hope you all liked the build update. All comments welcome!

Thanks Ian and Moni,

Lots of work done today. Most of it was on the wheels about close to 5 hours all on just the wheels. Each wheel took ages to paint. Here is the build update.

The longest journey starts with a single step

20161001_140940_RichtoneHDR_zpsbc09raqv.jpg

20161001_140859_RichtoneHDR_zpsohfuxc9m.jpg

All the wheels done finally - painting those rubbers on the wheels took its time. I used a black marker along the edge of the inside to get it as circular as possible. I used Tamiya Acrylic paint XF-1 Flat black over the enamel Dark Yellow. I cleaned up any excess with Windex.

20161001_233235_RichtoneHDR_zpsnrafqrkv.jpg

The lower Hull was painted and assembled

I broke off one of the wheel holders by applying too much pressure. I cannot find where the broken part is, I will look again tomorrow, might have to scratch build some kind of wheel holder there.

20161001_234552_RichtoneHDR_zpsl3za08yi.jpg

I primed the upper hull with Tamiya white primer and then pre shaded it with Tamiya XF -1 FLat black enamel paint

20161001_221020_RichtoneHDR_zps3xgie0e5.jpg

This was then painted with Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow enamel paint. The pre-shading came through so very happy with that! Here it is for now

20161002_000304_RichtoneHDR_zpso2jwod7k.jpg

Next up I will apply the red brown paint - free hand camo then will do up the tools, spare tracks and antenna. I might decide to do up the figure, havn't decided yet.

I hope you all liked the build update. All comments welcome.

I can't save you the time & trouble of cleaning up the wheels on a P  IV chassis Bob, but there's an easier way to paint them if you've got an airbrush.

Spray each wheel black/dark grey on the tyre section. Don't worry about getting it too neat.

Then use a circle template to spray the face. The one I have is made by Helix, but other manufacturers are available ;)

It gives perfect wheels every time.

Your pre-shading worked well, I've pretty much given up doing that. I find it easier to add high & lowlights using oils further down the line. Having said that, I might try the black & white pre-shading method on my Ferdinand ;)

Thanks for the info there Patrick, I am checking ebay for some circle templates and should have one ordered soon. I also saw Monica use one on her build so really want to get one now!

Thanks Moni, I saw your post and it was very helpful!

Here is the latest build update

The camo scheme was painted on with Tamiya Red Brown over the Dark Yellow. I painted it the way I would have done Camouflage on my face when we go out on exercise, kind of like how branches look or how shadows go over an object.

Some light weathering was done on some of the edges with black showing some chipping too - very light though.

The tools were done up as well, I still have to matt coat some of the tools as I have painted their handles a wooden colour which is done by first painting flat earth and then clear orange.

The Camo pattern shows up much lighter in the photos than in real life for some reason.

20161002_214915_RichtoneHDR_zpsnohdn3yh.jpg

Well I still have 4 spare wheels to do, and then some weathering with Vallejo washes and Tamiya Weathering Master and also Decals

Yeah as mentioned previously the camo pattern is much lighter in the photos, but is very distinct in real

I hope you all liked the update. All comments welcome

It's progressing very nicely. Red brown complements the dark yellow.

Drove out to The shop in Onnomba FRI, felt obliged to purchase.

Brought Tamiya Panther D.

That's not exactly what we're talking about Richard, although it's a very useful tool.

This is what I use - the smaller holes are good for aircraft wheels

Thanks for clarifying that Patrick. I have ordered a very similar one from ebay.

Thanks Moni!

Thanks Dave, that shop is usually very overpriced, though there are some good ones in there from time to time. Great kit that one, the Panther.

This should be the final update before completion. I have done up the decals, I have really weathered it a bit, not too much with Vallejo Acrylic Model Wash Light Grey. I also use Tamiya weathering master on the tracks - Sand and some Rust on the tools, with some soot as well on the exhaust.

I have also for the first time in my short modelling career attempted chipping, I did this with a sponge and some black and dark iron paint. I tried not to over do it, and only have it on the edges mostly. I hope it looks alright.

Here are the photos

So yeah the chipping is a first time for me, I hope it looks alright. Next up is the final matte coat and some weathering over the decals to make them look in line with the rest of the tank. So I should have a completed post up soon.

I hope you all like it all comments welcome

Thanks Ian, we did have a long weekend here in Queensland, Australia so I pretty much used it all on this

Here are the final build pics, I matte coated it and weathered the decals up a bit. The completed post is up and the link is at the end of this post. There is also a video in HD of the kit rotating in the completed post ... so have a look.
