Having painted one VC bust I have started on the seond - Hardy VC who was the most decorated non-combatant in the British army during WW1.

Here is the boxart by our very own Peter Day; - a high bar -

As with my previous bust, it is oil over a base coat of actylic, here is the base coat of Valejo acrylic which I airbrushed onto the bust:

Here with the first application of oil paint:

And here is the first stage of the head:

All now in the airing cupboard overnight.

Hi Peter
It is always interesting to see the same bust/figure done in different ways. Peter D works quickly with acrylics and you work with oils which is a much slower process.

Hi Jim. - glad to have you along.

Here is today's progress:

The tunic cloth pretty well finished, the buttons and bucklesand badges need painting as well as a little more work on the belt.

I had a slight problem this afternoon - whne placing it for the photo I manages to drop it behind the piano! Fortunately I was able to recover it with little damage - phew.

Lovely work Peter - nicely subtle tones. Dropping it behind the piano though is not a great idea (I've done it too).

Hi Peter
Very nicely done. As I said earlier it is so interesting to see Peter D's work and yours together. Both excellent but the paints used dictate a different technique and result in a different end result. If I could paint a fraction as well as either of you I would be a very happy bunny!! :smiling:

Thanks Jim

I would be very happy if I could paint acrylics like Peter D.

For a long time I tried to paint acrylics, first Andrea and the Vellejo and while Vallejo are better I have never managed to acheive the smooth transitions which Peter gets. I get reasonable results with them on AFV's and with 1/35 figures (sometimes). But It is only having changed to this oil over acrylic technique that results with busts have improved. Perhaps trying different paints may be an idea?
