Tonights simple task join the 2 tail pieces together really no this has to be the worst fitting pair of plastic mouldings in history as you can see from attached picture 6 clamps in attemp to seal the join which when it is set will have huge gaps in it requiring more filler I had actually painted these 2 items thinking a nice simple join and just a touch up now looks like a complete strip off and repaint I just hope the wings are better some hope!!!!
Fitted tailfin oh dear gap by the join to fuselage spine and all along bottom edge

Hours later filler sanded off and 2nd coat of red applied looking much better now any remaing gaps should disapear when the foiling is done

Moved onto next stage foiling only done a small bit to see how it would go its not difficult not to my way of thinking you just need patience and a methodical way of doing the same thing over and over
The effect is to me way better than what I could achive with paint and it requires no priming just a clean plastic surface so the glue sticks to the foil

Colin

More foiling I'm using the speed 5 folder base to flatten the foil before applying to the model then smooth it down on the model until the rivets etc appear in the foil before moving on to the next piece 1 panel at a time
Because I didn't do any preshading as the foil would cover it in any case each individual panel is being done and the join lines will become the panel lines that people replicate on the painted models through pre shading that's the plan working so far

3 hours later approx 1/4 of one side foiled as you can see from picture panels are now starting to appear with the demarcation lines of where I have cut them individually

Colin

Latest update another 4 hours work produced this yes there are a couple of mistakes but as this is my first attempt at foiling a model I'm really pleased with how it's turning out and one thing I do know if I do any more natural metal planes I will foil instead of paint

Colin

Last night's fumblings there are a couple of errors here and there but I still love the way it looks done like this one thing you do need is a good supply of blades for cutting & cotton buds for burnishing in the foil

Latest update and 1st serious problem looking at the picture you can see 2 unfoiled panels this was due to tearing the foil when trimming to the panel size so there is nothing you can do except scrape them clean and redo them which is what I was doing when my glue brush decided to stick to the inside of the bottle of foil glue which then promptly tipped over spilling glue all over the table
So after clearing up that mess and that glue is very sticky and requires meths / white spirit to remove it and then washing you hands in hot soapy water to finish with
After that I decided to call it a night

Regards

Colin

After the previous nights disaster today and tonight have been relatively calm and straight foward the fuselage is finished with the foil apart from a couple undercarriage doors for the nosewheel assembly
Yes there are plenty of mistakes as this is the 1st time I have tried this method but the effect is quite good with panels taking on different subtle hues of aluminium along the length
Another thing that should have been done is the surface need sanding smooth for the foil but in so doing a lot of the raised detail would have been lost so I left it as it was so there you have it next I believe the foil has to be treated to prevent tarnishing and allow paint to be applied anybody know what that is would be greatful for advice on that
Ok next job will be the nosewheel assembly followed by a clean up and give the red a final coat and the black anti glare panel on the top in front of the cockpit

Regards

Colin

Well done Colin, the foil looks very convincing. If you're not completely satisfied with the result this time round I'm sure the experience will hold you in good stead the next time around. I have to confess I've never attempted this technique but I may do now.
I also admire the accuracy mods you made to the kit - excellent stuff.

I'm sure this Lightning (and let's face it who doesn't like the Lightning!) will look super cool once complete.

Have fun
Paul
