Got the white bits sprayed the other day so this morning they were cured enough to mask up .The main airframe and top wing have now been coated in UMP. Matt black primer , the final coat will probably be a patchy nato black , I’m still undecided whether to spray the metal parts of the airframe silver and give it a bit of hairspray so I can chip it a bit. While I was waiting for the paint to dry I had a go at making the masks for the underwing fasces roundels. I put some extra wide tape onto a piece of clear plastic and then fixed this over the decal sheet . By carefully cutting the shape I finished up with a mask that I can use to spray the white fasces onto the wing underside. I thought I had four to do but all reference ( and there isn’t a lot!) seems to show the top wing without any , just the underside of the bottom wings , so it’s only the two.7C560CD9-72BE-4524-89A0-6AE8BE64CF90.jpegBEF965B3-4CA3-4757-8FC9-781781E33AFE.jpegB936A2BF-1EB7-4231-B2B3-6164CCF5E4DD.jpeg389A5F51-A8C8-4281-B244-B3A433D9F8E4.jpeg45112E18-B829-44A0-9462-EC20FAD3D32D.jpegDAE74688-A540-41B8-B236-AAA7588EAC97.jpeg8D2C5BD3-E191-4A37-94D5-6B606B362785.jpeg

After giving the whole airframe a coat of black primer I’ve decided to give the metal areas a coat of silver so masked up the fabric covered bits (wings ,tail planes , rudder and a section on the fuselage) and blasted on some Vallejo metal colour semi Matt aluminium. Once this was dry I gave it a misting with hairspray (elnette if you must know:smiling5:)
This will enable me to do some gentle chipping after the final black colour coat has gone on without any danger of straying onto the fabric areas. The final coat will be a combination of model air nato black and a few very dark greys misted on , just plain black would look a bit too unrealistic. 956DB218-F435-44CC-A132-C23332277CFD.jpeg552CAE70-8492-4941-9513-8B38358A125B.jpeg3AEE9F99-F1F7-4B35-8A10-1AE994511E5C.jpegB0EF9266-DCDB-4585-82BB-957A8080AFD6.jpeg

Looks great Tony. I remember Stona (Steve) saying many moons ago that he added a drop of red to his black to make it more 'in scale'.

How do you rate the Vallejo Metal Colour paints? I am going to be using them on my NMF P-38 GB aircraft

I find them excellent al , no nasty alclad smell and I find they cover a lot easier too , never could get on with Alclad. They are very hard wearing once cured and don’t lose too much sheen when coated with the metal colour clear varnish , cheers tony

Got a couple of coats of Vallejo model air nato black on but the paint wasn’t very co operative. Kept clogging the airbrush and I still think it needs a bit more , I can see the silver through it in places. 0C60D76D-9752-47CA-B13F-64EDDF626AF9.jpeg

After leaving the paint for a day or so to fully dry I’ve done the chipping and weathering. The hairspray technique worked beautifully , after wetting areas the paint could be scrubbed off with a stiff brush and very fine sanding sticks . The tricky bit is knowing when to stop , its all too easy to get carried away and end up doing too much. I’ve also taken off the masking for the fuselage band and rudder cross and was pleased to see no touching up needs to be done. Next job is the painted on markings and the few decals that I can use from the kit. Did the first bit of the national markings today , the white circular outline. Strangely one was just about perfect ,the other one bled under the mask like mad. It’s since been touched up though and tomorrow I’ll have a go at spraying the fasces . Apart from these and the fuselage band and rudder cross there’s only a few more markings to do. The fasce (axe bound in sticks) under the cockpit which is supplied as a decal , the red number 6 (spare decal box) ,a few white serial numbers again supplied on the kit sheet and the insignia of the night fighting units - the owl sitting on a crescent moon holding a rifle. Naturally this isn’t supplied in the kit so I’ve got to hand paint it :tired:.heres a few pics including one I found on the net of the actual aircraft I’m doing9E028A88-99DA-4DB4-A7E8-F221CC92AE79.jpeg814F58C5-1502-4F2B-AC19-87A002964D1D.jpeg22F212AC-086A-4FC9-9DC2-B15A53A8354D.jpeg0F32DC3C-CBA2-436B-988C-4C86CCB6BB83.jpeg, lucky really as there aren’t that many pics of the night fighter cr42s

Got the fasces masked up and sprayed and apart from a few tiny touch ups I’m really chuffed with how they’ve turned out. The few decals that I’m using have started to get put on , the circular fasce emblems under the cockpit and the serials under the tail plane are the only kit decals I’m using, the red 6 coming from the spares box and the owl in the crescent moon is going to be a mask and hand paint job. The top wing has had the aileron linkage rods added from guitar string ( high E I think , anyway the thinnest) , as has the rudder and I’ve made two navigation lights from plastic rod and my trusty nail art jewels , which have been attached to the front edges of the wing. I’ve got two more decals to add , the savoie coat of arms badge on the rudder cross , again from the spares box but I’ve got to find them first .AC617C98-22E7-4F22-8AAF-F343F1AA1D57.jpegC17775C3-43B8-4138-BEAB-5D95D59C9317.jpeg4256D288-82B9-4C42-82CB-47331970E88D.jpeg8EAEACBA-5BA2-4A38-B50A-CF612BF4E326.jpeg

That's great work Tony, good luck with the owl
Cheers mick, it’s going to be a magnifying lens special ! The crescent moon is easy , already got the circles cut out of tape ready for spraying , it’s the owl that’s going to be a bugger , it’ll be about 3mm high !:nerd: 5F00E462-B831-42E7-9CA1-2B6134C13318.jpeg

Cheers Andy , the hairspray technique is perfect for models like this with raised rivets as it’s easy to get a realistic looking worn appearance , I,ll be doing the same on the p-38 night lightning , cheers tony

Got the crescent moon masked up and blasted on about five thin coats of yellow . With a deep breath I removed the masking and was pleasantly surprised to see no touching up required . The hard bit is next , hand painting the tiny owl.F43CE281-DA9A-4BF5-8DDB-CB9F758D6424.jpeg1AB6C910-DAFA-4A5D-8508-2C20FA00073A.jpeg98800792-FC42-43A4-BF7C-9C4DEECB3F87.jpeg90E034FD-496E-4B83-8FA7-21441131CF8B.jpeg

Hi Tony
What you are doing with this shows skill and patience - it is looking great. Chipping looks just right and your masking and spraying has come out a treat.
A silk purse from this rather poor kit.
