First build in 35 years...

Hello everyone! I am back in the game. I made many a wwii airplane as a lad and I’ve decided, like many I guess, to get back into it during lockdown. I am working on an Airfix Lancaster BII 1/74 and it seems to be coming on nicely. I’ve learnt some new tips and tricks but I’m still as clumsy as I was with the glue! So far so good though, I think the cockpit and navigator station are looking good so far.

Welcome and it looks like your doing a stirling job.
I’ve just completed the Lancaster myself and it’s a great plane to build. I built the 1:48 scale but helped my son with his 1:72 build.
It was the wheel assembly’s that were tough to do as they are so delicate.
the bonus is the Lancaster has a nice big cockpit glass so you can actually see some of your hard work interior once it’s complete.

Nice thing nowadays being able to take phone pics so you can actually keep the record rather than losing the work inside a glued fuselage The radio station decal looks so good too, first time using a softener and I’m really pleased with the result so glad it’s not lost forever inside the plane.

Welcome to the forum - nice work - especially in 1/72! Acrylic, or enamel paint? What sort of glue problems are you having?, and what sort of glue are you using? As you probably realise, techniques and materials have moved on in 35 years!

Thanks Dave. I’m using acrylic paints which seem to be nice and easy to work with so far. Having YouTube nowadays helps a lot in terms of hints and tips. For that reason I learnt that using a thin cement is best so I bought the Tamiya extra thin cement, good stuff, the problem is my hand is not as steady as it used to be. I also bought a magnifying light ring which has been incredibly helpful especially on some of the detailing. I’m a little nervous as to how to do the camo externally. Any tips most welcome!

TET is indispensable, but for more structural joints, I use Revell Contacta

The fine 'hypodermic' needle helps to put the glue exactly where you want - especially with shaky hands ( yes - me too ).

Undercarriage assembly, as pointed out earlier, was fiddly and I have a warped wing strut on the left which is pushing my wheel bay about a bit. Some hack and slash and Ive sorted it. Also the engine covers don’t fit great on this model, Airfix Lancaster BII. Anyway, we are where we are, flaps down, wheel bays open, that’s it for today I think.

Undercarriage looks good. I have limited experience of building planes but the undercarriage often seems fiddly and fragile.
