I'm calling this one done. You can see how it went here.

http://www.scale-models.co.uk/planes-helicopters/16588-p-47-thunderbolt-6.html

Firstly,a big thank you to Dave (Gern) who pressed the kit,Hasegawa's 1/32 P-47D,into my sweaty paws.

It's built OOB with the addition of a harness from RB productions. I did, thank heavens, forgo the "invasion stripe" decals in favour of spraying them.

Francis Gabreski is a well known figure and one of the most successful pilots to have flown with the USAAF/USAF. He was an ace in two wars. A quick google will tell you all you need to know. I've modeled his aircraft as it was on the day he was forced to make an emegency landing having struck the ground whilst strafing the airfield at Bassenheim in Germany. He was the commanding officer of the 61st Fighter Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group at the time.

Anyway, here's a quick walkaround. I've included a couple of figures for scale though they are not quite finished. I'll be away for a while so they may be some time waiting :smiling3:

Cheers

Steve

Nice one Steve. That turned out rather nice! I quite like the camouflage on it.

First class paint job on those figures too, even if they are not finished yet!!!

I like it!

Have five stars to pin on the wall!

Thanks fellas.

I've stuck this on a shelf with a "flying" Bf 109 K,they are contemporaries. It's amazing just how much bigger the P-47 is!

Crap snapshot alert :smiling3:

Brilliant build, love the camouflage job. Not much room below the belly tank is there? Quite the contrast between the size of the P47 and the 109. The 109 seems to look small next to most other contemporary fighters at the best of times.

Very nice Steve.

Also like to see the aircraft with a back ground & figures giving scale.

Steve you are another who produces, like Roman, in short time. I think I must be the slowest builder on this planet.

Must try & get up in the morning that will help ?

Great result Steve. I've never seen a P 47 in that finish before. Nice one.

Hi Joe,

I've been trying to find out what the clearance was on the real thing because as you say it's not much on the model. Finally, having ploughed through pages and pages of 8th AF documents pertaining to drop tanks and their fitting I found the answer in a report on bomb loads!

The clearance was about 4 inches.

It doesn't sound like it but I do enjoy this sort of research in original sources :smiling3:

Cheers

Steve
