My attempt at weathering a HOT rusty exhaust

i have been looking at exhausts that are hot, and also rusty, and the colour isnt like rust as ive been doing, its got more of a whiter colour, and wanted to replicate that.

So what i did was use vallejo dark rust, with an opaque light rust once dried.

Then I applied scenic rust, and left to ...to er... Well, rust!

Then (and this was by accident i found this out on another model!) i wiped the exhaust gently with white spirit and a cotton bud. Once that was dry, albeit with an oily feel, i dusted matt varnish over it!

It did exactly what i hoped it would, the acrylic varnish semi reacts to the white spirit.

Well, i like it anyway!

As I've never seen my exhaust pipe at high temperature, I'll take your word for it Dave!

But something about it looks right! I'm just wondering if the muffler section would be as white as the pipe .... thinking of insulation etc ... hmm I dunno!

Nope, the exhaust muffler will still get hot, try one, youll see!

Looking at pics of exhausts they all have that muted rust look, and only seem to take on a darker more original rust colour after they have sat for a while.
