Well in preparation to my upcoming build of the Bismarck 1/350 Tamiya I thought I would tackle a smaller project but equally enjoyable.
I have just watched Das Boot and really enjoyed the action and close ups of the U boat.
I have searched the web for the photo etch for this kit but thinking I’m spending quite a bit on the upgrades for the Biz I thought I’d do this out of the box
I’ve watched a few videos of this Build and seems pretty straight forward.
I’ll have to source some more paints befor I start.
I’ll post some pics later today of the kit and progress

Kind regards

Robert

Here’s pics as promised lots of tiny holes to drill but I’m making good progress and I’ve thinned the backside of the plastic with my dremil

Hi guys I got chance in between my other stuff going on work and mainly my wife’s welfare.( another story fir another time ..... anyway the basic construction of the sub is complete and to be fair even in the 1/144 scale the detail in the kit is quite spot on to the ref photos I have been looking at.
So now all sub assemblies are complete it was time to prime the pieces
I used Vallejo 74.602 Black Negro Surface primer fir an album over even coat. This wil show up areas I need to tackle before committing to paint. Oh I was also making up very small swastika with a fine waterproof micro marker as I want my sub to look the part and decals this small are hard to find
Pics of progress
Enjoy, all comments welcome 15D6075A-7A45-4C1D-923C-02B6463D2956.jpegB873C039-8752-46D4-830A-DE8A9A384965.jpeg05210420-5FDE-481F-9E61-F3698BA69369.jpeg8585E81B-890C-4647-B224-84B7C742ADD8.jpeg9B51B96F-6104-441E-96B4-26D177E97D1E.jpeg0C9307C5-A241-4BEF-AD08-E90D710C8D1E.jpegCDA9A16D-164B-4E36-897E-A18F47BB5A9F.jpeg1DBD1568-3B06-4E80-A36E-DD3D0B0688A4.jpeg3B4E138F-88E1-47CD-843D-B4847C2945F7.jpeg37ADDF61-9C26-40F2-883A-1F701AE2F818.jpeg42536805-55B4-41F4-8693-6705F0D597F3.jpeg591AC816-E7EC-4546-B39A-D57C486B0D68.jpegF40938B7-FE0F-4064-A718-B46A51432742.jpegF9EDC9D6-DE67-47A7-929B-AA5020478E03.jpeg

Good to see another sub being built! Nice start and already in primer, nice.
One small critique: personally I don't really like the handdrawn swastika (sorry). I would discard it. Quite often the flag wasn't on display anyway, only when in harbor I think or during rendez-vous with other ships. Just my two cents. Which colors will you use for the hull?

Cheers

I agree with your comments on the swasika for the flag now you mention it
To be honest I was not going to use the flag as I can never get the ruffle right as blowing in the wind. Plus she will be on her stand and not in a diorama as I’m no good at water modelling
Colours
I’m portraying the Sub in the Kreigsmarine tone RAL colours. My research says that the decking although partly wood had a black paint protection over it so when it comes to weathering this will be more chipping and very light wear so to speak. The sub only had two tours so again the rusting I would doubt would be very heavy either but I will attempt streaking water stains etc
It’s a shame really that the main colour pics I can find of this type of sub are very rare and mainly pics are grainy and black and white but I’ll use a bit of artists choice.
I have quite a few weathering powders and washes that I can try
Wish me luck

Down to first paints
The entire hull was sprayed dark grey RAL 7024 and the conning tower and flak guns deck gun and snorkel RAL 7001 this is the best approximation of the codes to the colours of my paints I could achieve
It was nice to finally remove the masking to see the results
Still a way to go and touch ups with the masking ( always a chance you take )

Hi Robert,
Nice progress, I unboxed mine last week but I'm gonna finish some other projects first. So in the meantime I'll be watching your build ; D...

Those U-boats were touched-up all the time so no harm done with the masking tape ; )
Cheers,
Steven

Well I had to do some more research as my two tone should have been 3 tone but now I have fixed this issue
Lower below waterline is staubgrau ( dust grey) above waterline blaugrau ( greyish blue ) and conning tower Grau ( grey ) decking is a mix of dust grey and flat black so to immitate the black protection paint they put over the wood but I have here and there dabbed a little red brown and with a flat head brush with a thinner of white drawn the brush back to lighten and give a worn look.
Still have weathering to go but coated the whole sub in clear coat to protect the paint.
The stand I have sprayed gloss black and highlighted with silver boarding and brass paint
I'll leave to dry for the next day or two before attempting washes and weathering
