Salmon and Gluckstein's English Channel Dash. 11th / 13th Feb. 1942.

Why Salmon and Gluckstein?
The British were unable to get their tongues around Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, the correct name for these sister German Battleships, so the press nicknamed them after a famous London Tobacconist. The public soon took up the names.

On the 11 Feb. 1942, these two ships, along with the Heavy Cruiser Prinz Eugen and a destroyer escort left Northern France and 'Dashed' up the Channel. Successfully arrived at safe German ports on the 13th.....

These are the two kits I'm using. Prinz Eugen was already built some time ago.

Update.....
The deck planking is way too wide, summat like six feet wide! So, using my scalpel, I gently scrape additional boards parallel to the moulded ones. They can't really be seen at a scale distance but it gives the deck a bit more umph when painted.



I can't stand those vicious modelling clamps. (Far too brutal) I prefer these simple gentle pegs.



The deck glues on, rather than in the hull, so you are left with this ridge of plastic.
Not only does it look naff, it makes the hull far too deep and out of scale.


So out with the scalpel again and some gentle scraping sorts it out. I've also started to flatten out the port holes which protrude out far too much.

Got to agree about the peg clamps Ron. If you need the pressure that modelling clamps provide, you should re-check the parts for flash or warping. Too much pressure on a joint could force a gap later - or even break the join.

PS The pegs I got have rubber tips which helps stop them sliding on sloped surfaces such as trailing edges. Dirt cheap too. I got a pack of 12 from my local Poundshop.

Interesting fact - after the Channel Dash - Gneisenau went into drydock at Kiel, to repair damage from a magnetic mine struck during the dash. A RAF raid on 26th Feb hit the Gniesenau in dock, exploding her forward nagazine. She was eventually deemed beyond repair & her guns removed & used for coastal defence - so the escape was shortlived, for the Gneisenau at least

Salmon & Gluckstein went into the catering business - using the name 'Lyons' for their cafes - a straight descendant of the family is Nigella Lawson!

I was going to give her some basic rigging, but at a scale distance the stuff won't be seen.

Gneisenau done.

More or less the same as Scharnhorst but slightly different mast layout and she has some colour on her main and secondary turret roofs.
