Sorry that I’ve not been very present recently. I had a patch while I didn’t really feel like making anything and still haven’t got the mojo for military modelling. It will come back. Meanwhile I’ve been sculpting. I made a couple of hares in DAS clay for my wife. I made an armature for the smaller one in aluminium mesh and she said that she had hoped that he would be a bit bigger, so I ended up doing two! I then painted them with raw umber and dry-brushed with copper and gold to give a bronze finish.
I’m now in the process of making an owl, sculpting him the other way by carving. I’ve got as far as band-sawing one profile and marked the second. Then I’ll start taking the corners off. As it’s so large it has to be done slowly! It’s a good job that my work has a big bandsaw.
So my wife is finally getting the sculptures that she’s wanted for a few years!

Great to see you still using your talents. The hares are beautiful. There is something rather special about hares and owls. Something mystical maybe.

Fantastic work andy , I love hares , such a beautiful animal . The sculptures are superb , looking forward to seeing the owl . The art of taking away pieces of a large block until youve only got the subject left ( ie. carving and sculpture !) takes a very special skill , one that has always fascinated me - it must be so hard . I would be no good at it , i’d always take too much off and probably end up with something a tenth the size it was intended to be and nothing like the subject!

Fantastic work Andy, and great to see you posting again. Is the owl still attached to the log? That'll be extra challenging! Keep us updated please.

Thanks guys for your welcome! and Sorry again for not joining in much.

Some of you may have noticed that Mike Butler has just published his own book Modelling and Painting WW1 Allied Figures. It's getting good reviews but I've not got my own copy yet. Several of our joint projects are in it and even on the front cover! I'm really looking forward to reading how Mike achieves what he does, but it probably involves more patience and skill than I have!!
