Keeping an eye open at all times, for useful budget priced modelling goodies prompted a closer look at some new tins of clear varnish on the shelves of Asda stores, what caught my eye was 'Extra clear varnish' which appears to be an acrylic based finish in either matt or gloss. With the gradual phase out of spirit based and cellulose products we need to start looking for good alternatives for the future, whilst there will never be a substitute for good old marine varnish and its waterproof qualities, there are times when a polyvinyl acetate finish will do the job on normal paint protection.

Already plastic wood as we once knew it has dramatically changed its formulae from cellulose based to water based, this material now has a different feel about it and in my opinion does not sand down quite as well. But we will just have to adapt and live with the new technology,if it saves the planet from further harm with obnoxious fumes then that cannot be a bad thing.
