Slow progress with the cockpit but I am just about done.

The decal experiment was a failure simply because even at its highest quality the printer did not produce strong enough colours. Consequently I ended up 'lifting' the Trumpeter decals from the card and, where I had problems, resorted to the spares box. I managed to pull together a reasonable result.

I did a pin wash, matt varnished then used Uschi Metal Powders to bring out highlights and to give a worn metal look.

The i.p. - the dials and some details were gloss varnished.

I am not sure what that is on the black i.p. cover for the rear seater. It only shows on the photo so I will take a look more closely tonight at that.
Beautiful cockpit Barry , those seats have painted up superbly. If I’m not mistaken the thing on top of the WSO’s instrument panel is an ashtray .;)

I have been progressing on a number of fronts. I will post more pics soon.

in the meantime a couple to go on with.

There is nothing in the instructions about weighting the nose so I have no idea if it’s a tail sitter. As I like my models all ‘buttoned up’ I decided not to fit the nose radar and to fill the nose cone with some weight.

liquid gravity works well I poured some into the nose cone and then drops of thin c.a. to seal it all. I won’t fit the nose cone until I have tested that this is enough.

I have also been making up the u/c legs. They have metal inserts for strength.

I like my models built all codes up so the lines of the aircraft are on display, the cockpit and wheel wells excepted. Trumpeter design the model to have all the hatches open so when fitting them on the closed position the fit is not great and some work is needed.

in this pic I have glued various hatches into place.

If you look closely you will see various gaps etc. Mr Dissolved Putty is next

once dry and in order to preserve detail I ‘wet sand’ with a cotton bud dipped in I.p.a.

It takes a little elbow grease rubbing away but after a final wipe over with paper towel wettened without ipa. You get to this

Better but not yet perfect. I will have another localised MDP treatment and a very light run over with a sanding sponge. A bit of scribing work then to finish for now. Any remaining issues will be dealt with after a primer.

I haven't seen that trick with Mr Dissolved Putty Barry, I always sand it. Very neat idea, I'll have to give it a go.

Hi Barry
That work on the fit issues of the hatches has worked really well. The primer usually shows flaws but in this case it all looks rather good :thumb2:

Indeed, it does work well. There are a couple of areas where I need to do another treatment, sand (a little) and scribe.

not a lot of colour in the wheel wells. A little bit of silver and black used and weathering will do the rest. Gloss varnish next for wheel wells.

She is coming along Chris, just slow progress, I do get only an hour or so most days at the bench with a business to run and a demanding missues but I did take a few pics last night.

I have cemented the nose clamshell sides around the pit and forward wheel well. No issues

IMG_1673.jpg

Here is a pic of the main u/c now painted and weathered with a brown wash and some chipping with Uschi metal powder.
IMG_1672.jpg

I have also painted primer on the main fuselage underside. I had to do a fair bit of sandoing and filling on it and I want to check it over.
IMG_1671.jpg

As you can see the engines are in place and as you cannot see anything of them I did not bother detailing and painting them.

Unusually for me I will be painting the underside camo colour once I have rectified any flaws, before I cement it to the top. This is because of the engineering and the need to paint some otherwise inaccessable areas behind where the wheel legs will be. The finish will be ruined by future processes and will need repainting, but hopefully not in those inaccessable areas.

A bit more progress. I sprayed the Light Ghost Grey underside and got a rather nice finish. Pity most of it will need to be repainted....

A7C697AF-6062-48CF-8D25-08A724DF2B14.jpeg

I then glued the u/c assemblies into place along with a couple of other bits and bobs....

Here you can see clearly why I painted the underside...

AD57C470-AA6E-48C4-998B-BB14C5CF4C29.jpeg

This is certainly a large model, it must be one of the two or three largest I have built.

With storm Dennis menacing the coast I might get a bit more time than usual at the bench this Sunday unless I am occupied trying to keep our fences upright!!!!!
