Got the other boom together today and gave them both a dose of filler round the intakes as the separate kit intake fronts were a bit small .The top and bottom of the fuselage/wings is ready to go together but not until I drilled the identification lights out and glued some silver sequins behind the holes. These will be filled later with clear red, green and orange ( amber) . I’ve also boxed in the wing mounted landing light and will be adding a light later.DAA45D98-1260-4512-8B27-DA883144A25C.jpegD12F22A6-E8D5-44DC-9761-61E70B76BB57.jpeg9B2D41BA-906C-404A-9304-3D508180F831.jpeg

Fantastic Tony, you've added more detail than I to the same kit. I like the sequins for the identification lights. Funny that Monogram didn't provide the tub for the piggy back rider cockpit night fighter version. Good job on that.

Cheers,
Richard

Got the top and bottom wings together now with more pegs than your nans clothes line on washday ,with just a touch of filler needed on the back edge of the second cockpit insert. The nose wheel bay was bugging me as there isn’t one to speak of , just the underneath of the cockpit floor and no sides so I boxed it in with plastic card and it looks tons better . I think I may have to do something similar with the main wheel bays too, I know no ones going to ever see up there but I just can’t leave them , it would drive me nuts knowing that the rest of the model is very detailed but they were rubbish.C26DCF29-60D8-4F88-9A4A-7DBA58D705CE.jpegD66DCF98-A4E4-4E02-8004-2E59BCDEBD0C.jpeg8CC7C41A-39ED-4C52-AFCC-D2345E166BC8.jpegFB4A3B4F-8F2D-4B2C-B308-7F3F82D875AC.jpegF33D627B-0A89-44E5-A5D6-BFF2BE957E6A.jpeg

Hi Tony, great work on the boxing up of the front wheel bay. Are you going to add the ladder later extracted or stored? I faired up that area on mine. The other area to check out are the wing tips, they're not thick but bevel upwards.

Cheers,
Richard

Cheers richard , I cut off the lugs on the ladder and glued a piece of plastic card at the pivot end so i can add the ladder in the extended position later on. I haven't got round to sanding the joints on the wings yet but when I do I’ll sort the tips out ,thanks for the heads up cheers tony

Got the seams on the booms sanded , just got to reinstate a bit of the detail, and got them glued to the wings .the underside of the wing to boom joint is a bit large but a smear with Vallejo acrylic putty and a wet finger should sort that . The tail plane hasn’t been glued yet, I’m just trying it for fit . Looking a bit more like a lightning now .C15488F1-9DA4-437A-B526-FF57F1AAF835.jpeg

This is turning out rather nice Tony. I must admit that watching these GB builds and that New P38 from Tamiya temptation is big at the moment.
Hmm RAF had these for evaluation did they not? LOL.

Yes the name was originally given to the aircraft by the British , but the p-38 the air ministry specified was a very different animal , not having the superchargers and therefore a bit gutless. We didnt use them much if at all , as far as i know the only maker to do a kit of this variant is RS models in 1/72 i think . Cheers tony

Well its been a long time since i did anything in the shed but i finally got back onto this one. The problem of finding somewhere for the lead weights was solved by putting some in the nacelles before the fronts were glued on . I also attached the PE grilles to the back of the intakes before this . Ive now fitted the guns , ammo boxes ,the right hand side of the nose cowling and the nose cone, with a fair bit of shimming and acrylic putty. The left hand cowling will be temporarily fitted for painting. Next job is to mask and fit the canopies7AA9233D-CBD1-4826-BED8-8F13EED665A1.jpeg65D746A1-5465-4E46-AF0A-1F8658837CF1.jpegAD8E26C4-E55D-4D80-B715-B7651EEDF5E3.jpeg

Hi Tony

Sorry missed the start of this being a recent-ish arrival on here.

Very impressed with the work you did on the cockpit, it clearly took some effort, and the fuselage also came together nicely.

I've recently picked up a 1/72 Monogram kit of 1970 vintage and that too has raised panel lines. Very odd.

Looking forward to seeing this finished.

Thanks richard , ive had a chronic shortage of time lately so im glad to get back on the horse too! The considerable amount of lead in the nacelles adds hopefully enough weight to keep its nose down, with the open gun bay theres nowhere else i could find to put it .

Cheers andrew , glad to have you along for the build , yes raised panel lines , some hate them with a vengeance and wont touch them but i dont mind at all , it just means you have to be a bit careful cleaning up seams etc and sometimes theyre just as accurate as recessed ones , cheers tony

Tony, you've got the tail on so you can test by balancing a pivot like a dowel or large paint brush handle along the line of where the rear wheels touch the ground. If the front pivots forward then you're ok.

Cheers,
Richard

Bit more done on the lightning yesterday . I’ve been adding a bit of detail to the wheel wells , ive not gone mad , just a few prominent areas . The pipe that runs the length of the well has been added from lead solder, and the various access panels from circles of plastic card .I also made the structures that the door retraction jacks at each end of the bay are connected to . I’ve dry fitted the undercarriage legs and it’s definitely not a tail sitter ! The nacelle fronts have been fitted after the etched grilles were glued to the back face. I’ve now fitted the windscreen and second cockpit canopy sections , the middle sliding windows and the folding roof will be added after painting.48F9120F-73AC-4E4C-9137-7373BD9E16AC.jpeg5C1535F5-D504-4F59-9853-DAF2F4A36BF7.jpeg2391E47A-9809-4E89-9267-B1F2A26C54C1.jpeg095E510E-7C9C-462D-81D3-479F995F333B.jpeg255D80D9-7A1C-4D87-8A22-C9C90F993193.jpegF573CBEB-D900-44CA-B46C-313A52952B26.jpegF806034F-2345-4607-A2D5-458B590562ED.jpeg

It’s now had a base coat of silver , if there’s anything that needs sorting I’ll do it now before it has a coat of hairspray , then once that’s fully dried it’s ready for the gloss black top coat.E6DF6195-5713-4C72-940C-0A8A973405C4.jpeg6F3B8B2E-8A0D-4E09-A9D2-764B553C7114.jpeg
