Now here is perhaps the most novel tip so far here,it concerns those exhaust stacks that you see on fighter aircraft like the Spitfire,Hurricane,Defiant etc etc before they introduced the flame dampers the aircraft had a simple curved set of exhaust stacks, the noise was hurrendous as you can well imagine.

Some years ago I was confronted with having to make up several sets of exhausts for small model fighters and stumbled across this rather novel idea-

Macaroni comes in a big box and the shapes are exactly what we need, you will need to sort out a few shapes as sets but that is not all that difficult,Macaroni as you know is a form of pasta and when dry is very tough, just make up a balsa backplate and with a sanding block gently trim the shapes to size, glue a row of them depending on how many stack pipes are required, leave the lot to dry out and then give a coat of clear dope to seal everything, then a coat of rusty red matt paint finishes them off.

When mounted onto your model they look great and defy what they are made from in the first place.
