Fine build up of thinned paint to lay a good base then a wet coat to finish.

Or as I do paint it matt then give it a gloss varnish.

That is what I am doing, using acrylic Tamiya Clear (gloss) on the painted (acrylic) surface. I am getting a good hard smooth shiny gloss by airbrushing one coat at 40 PSI, undiluted, holding the AB (0.4 mm needle) quite close, close enough to get a wet finish. Keep spraying until all is wet. Runs don't seem to be a problem.

Or try Pledge Klear at 10 PSI.
