Another visit to the art shop today, for a first class product that could help you.

Watercolour artists use a product called Maskol or masking fluid, basically this is a tinted latex based liquid which masks the area you do not want painted, you simply apply it to the paper, allow to dry and paint over the edges, when used with models it serves exactly the same purpose and once the job has been completed the film just rolls away leaving a clean edge.

One word of warning if you apply this liquid with a small paintbrush then you can say goodbye to that brush ! the answer is to use those cheap brushes sold in pound/dime stores, alternatively I use a rubber applicator, once again available from art suppliers, all they are is a shaped rubber tip inserted into a ferrule, the liquid easily rolls off once dry and these tools can be used again and again.

Another tip is to use the masking fluid along the edge and then butt up to the edge with newspaper or whatever to add further masking for larger areas, the advantage of masking fluid over tape is the ability to execute intricate designs, give this product a try it is very economical in use.

No problems there, the latex is a neutral product, will not attack any of your paint finishes, just like any masking task make sure the paint is fully cured, enamel takes about a week and cellulose three days normally, should not be any problems with acrylic either.

Good question there Ad.
