1/16 BARGE FOR CANAL PROP.

This is a scratch built 1930's European style canal and coastal barge, they are unpowered and are horse drawn on the canals. Once near the sea they are taken by a tug around the coast to a port for resupply. The boat has a powered winch and basic navigation lights that are run from a onboard generator. She is higher than the common thinking of a barge and is wider than a narrowboat.

The hull is made from plasticard and measures around 2ft long, she is braced but is designed as a static prop so is not seaworthy, so to speak. The crane is scratch made from various bits I had in the spares/junk boxes. The fuel tank is actually a 1/16 PIV exhaust but fits just right for a fuel tank for the onboard generator. Other details are some used small bore cartridges, cut down (no idea where I got them from) these have some brass rod through as mooring bollards-I know, one went wonky There is some actually boat bits,the small porthole, the rear lamp and a mast lamp when I finish it.

The decks are just lollipop sticks and coffee stirrers, I was not bothered about them being really neat as I wanted the battered worn look, they have been painted and weathered and sanded back.

There is still bits to fit and then weathering to do on the hull etc.

When finished she will go on the canal pieces I made for our RC tank village.

That means a lot Laurie, my disability hasn't been great over the past couple of years and is getting slowly worse, a lot of hand, joint and muscle pain.

I love looking at a pile of junk or working on something and suddenly, the idea pings off that I have something in a drawer that would work gives me great pleasure, even more so when it actually does look right.

Hopefully, I can do the hull and other parts justice and tie it all together.

Funny how we make things and then suddenly, it seems, we start to struggle more and more with health, eyesight-even when I use my magnifiers I still struggle at times but, age and problems comes to us all in then end-just sooner for some folk.

I still manage to make stuff, although it is mainly 1/16 for the RC village, so like the brazier and broken crate etc, little things I can cope with. To be honest this barge is the biggest thing I have built for ages-I got the hull and thought this should easy, er no, basically it fell apart on inspection, was damaged so, I had to go back to square one and rebuild it from the keel up. Funnily enough, I am enjoying it Laurie.

Seen you scratch buildings, very nice work and they look superb in your dio settings.

Cheer Rick, glad you like it mate. I am going to try and get to some weathering in the next day or so, just finishing off some fixtures.

Thank you Chris, appreciate the lovely comment. There are times when I think I may sell up and pack in and then...I decided to just have a break and find something in the bits ox to cobble together, if it works it works, if not, bin it but enjoy it.

Sorry to read things have been bad for you Si.
The fact that you still have an interest and some great skills is good .
This getting old and finding things harder that we just took for granted is hard !

So, it is larger scale and although I can detail better it is a trade off that I get knackered more. Still, keeps out of the missus way for a while.

UPDATE

Mast light painted and a new lens made from some clear acetate.
Another wood storage area made just in front of the main hatch.
Side window made, this a oval, non glazed type-works like a porthole, just unlocks and lets fresh air in, closed when at sea.
Started to make fit stanchions and looking at how to string them using some thin wire.
Weathered the mast and lamp and have sanded the gloss red back and started to weather the fuel tank and crane.
Fuel tank is fixed in place with a brass cap fitted.
