My Chambers dictionary defines 'Impasse' as: a situation from which further progress is impossible; a deadlock, stalemate. So:

For the 'non-ologists', according to the fossil records, these animals never met as they lived something like 80 million years apart.

Back to my little fire engine tomorrow.

Sorry Chris. I completely forgot you had asked.

According to the fossil records, Triceratops was around 155-150 million years ago and Stegosaurus was a newcomer around 68-65 million years ago - give or take a Tuesday!
