Looking great Rob. Love the painted variation on the base especially.
Thanks Jim, your right about the shadows and it seems to help give a bit of depth to the veg.Excellent work. Making real progress and learning for the future. One good thing about a black or very dark primer is that as you give a series of light colour coats your shadows are already defined.
Ta very much Tim, perhaps I shouldn't mess about with it too much more and loose it overdoing it?Looking great Rob. Love the painted variation on the base especially.
Nice one thanks Neil. That looks the dog's, Rob,; I wouldn't do much more to it.
Thanks Steve, of course your right . I guess sand bags would have been more effort and time too when dug out earth works would have blended in far better. I'll make a few adjustments, organise some kinda camo/vegetation.From a tactical viewpoint the sandbags would draw an observers eye immediately! Therefore continue the foliage from the existing across the front face of the position - remember things are seen because of shape, shine, silhouette, surface and spacing (you can include colour and sound just to be pedantic but they are basically initial attractors!). Looking good so far!
Steve
My recommendation is, buy a roasting tray or use an old surplus one, oven at 180° spread soil out 1cm deep? bake for 20mins, kills bugs, seeds etc, sieve thru strainers into grades...... lasts forever, and you can add chalks or pigments to lighten or darken colour, i have from my travels many types of soils or clays...... an x partner called me Sgt. Miller lmaoHi folks
After jumping in with no reconnaissance and finding the locals very hospitable ! I'm hoping for some tips.
I hear that soil from the garden can be used in dios but should it be dried thoroughly? Would you go as far as putting it in the oven?
Here's what I done so far, I had the idea for a dug out with a radio operator in it but realized it was way to close to a live firing anti tank gun so gone with a flanking fox hole instead.
This may take a while but enjoying me self with a shant to get the cahoonaas to post it!
Cheers Rob
Cheers AndrewComing on VERY nicely.

Thanks Allen, the figs are demanding little blighters much of the time, I find it hard to do half hr here and there, have to sit with them for a few hrs at a time. Guess there is no quick fix.Wow Rob, that is some really nice work there. Going to be a great dio when you're finished. Love the figs too!!!
Prost

Thanks for the tips there Nick, particularly the adding chalks/pigments gotta try that out.My recommendation is, buy a roasting tray or use an old surplus one, oven at 180° spread soil out 1cm deep? bake for 20mins, kills bugs, seeds etc, sieve thru strainers into grades...... lasts forever, and you can add chalks or pigments to lighten or darken colour, i have from my travels many types of soils or clays...... an x partner called me Sgt. I did that once and discovered lots of ferrous bits sparking awayI put mine in the microwave, potatoes are optional if you want .5 mins on full power !
Thank you kindly John, and I'm chuffed to see you've found an exciting new direction to bump start your mojo. I'll pop over and take a peek over the gathering crowds heads if I may.Looking really good Rob.
Thanks Jack, t'woz nerve racking but fun! Go for it!Think you have absolutely nailed the 'Nightshift method'. I saw his video of this recently and it really does make sense. Looking forward to trying it myself...although sure it's not as easy as it looks. Be very happy if I achieve your results.
Sorry to be old mister negative Peter, but there is no way that freezing things will sterilise them. Biologicals such as bacteria, tissue samples, and seed libraries, are kept at -70 DegC to keep them viable. The master cell bank for the main product I worked on for thirty odd years was stored this way in the nineteen sixties and still gIves viable cell lines in 2022…for example.Kew Gardens sterilise soil by putting it in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Yes, sorry, I should have put quote marks around 'sterilise'. Freezing the compost is apparently how they reduce the probability of introducing pathogens with new plants, according to one of the staff at their quarantine centre who was interviewed on the radio a couple of week ago. Possibly she was referring only to killing off any insect life? I know that domestic freezer temperatures of -18 C will kill off woodworm in wood.Sorry to be old mister negative Peter, but there is no way that freezing things will sterilise them. Some seeds need to be frozen and thawed before they germinate as well. Can’t name any species off the top of my head, but I bet John can
Freezing can selectively reduce bioburden, killing such things as germinated annual plants by disrupting cellular material, as the water crystals grow large enough to burst structures if the freezing is done slowly. However, the only way to sterilise anything (achieve a six log reduction in viable biological material) is by filtration, by heat, by treating with chemicals, by exposure to ultra Violet light, or by exposure to radiation. This was a standard interview question for biopharmaceutical production candidates throughout my career
That would keep it from smelling and producing loud muttering from da missis, but I should be ok for a bit, knocked up a job lot!Kew Gardens sterilise soil by putting it in the freezer for a couple of hours.

I'll have to check out bird grit Andy, I've heard tell of the use of cat litter in dios but yet to try.Hi Rob,
Firstly,.... I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA about using real earth for Dios,HOWEVER, i find that all that hassle to use it can be avoided!...
.... I just paste on a little PVA,scatter some bird grit and whichever other additions you may want, say, stones/rocks,then stain in a relevant base earth colour,(Depending on which region you want to portray).... Job done... No Gardening required!!
Obviously it`s just my methods... but they work IMHO !!
Second question is,which MG Team is that which you have done?,They look absolutely awesome by the way....
They look a little like a set i have from Academy.... but with some subtle differences?
Excellent work all round Mate
