Once again another little fill in project to push my miniatures painting. A brand new subject for me in ACW. I’m going to paint up this Union soldier but it won’t be a fast one as one pot of paint is in the post and in two days I’ll be flying off on my hols. This was another £1 find on eBay, a pic of the sprue and my intended victim.

Just rewatching the Ken Burns Civil War documentaries and painting some 15mm wargames rebels, so I’m keen on this one as well.... he looks like a member of the iron brigade to me.....

Peter and Tim thanks for jumping in so quickly, it is a subject I know so little about but will learn as I research this project

There are some great uniform resources written by Don Troiani, and his paintings are pretty good too......
For background, the documentary I mentioned above is unsurpassed, it’s probably the best documentary series ever made.....

Nice start Mick. I think the Hardee hat should be black though...

This ones just about finished. Tabletop standard for me, I’ve really enjoyed this and starting to look at ACW for the first time. I shall be painting up his 4 colleagues on the sprue and have an artillery piece coming too. Thanks to those of you who have been following, oh and what’s happened to the weather? Just back from Cyprus and got the heating on.

Nice finish. Iron brigade?
Not sure Tim, quite a few of the figures I’m painting have forage caps. I only have an old Osprey book for reference and really need to do a bit more research as this makes fascinating reading

Hi Mick
I think the Hardee hats were dress uniform, and most troops preferred the undress forage cap or kepi. Hardee’s were only worn by the iron brigade in the eastern theatre, but were more widely used in the western theatre I believe.
Don’t take any of this as gospel though, ACW uniforms are deceptively complex......

This little sprue of figures is ready for the table top, if I still played. I have a Union artillery piece to do but I need to crack on as the night fighter group build is approaching. I’m definitely going to do some more of these as I’ve really enjoyed them.
