The compass rose is the actual design that is found on the compass face that donates the 32 major points of the compass i.e North, North by East, North North East, North East by North etc.

It was originally created as a means of donating wind directions but became the background to the compass face.

Or it could be the name of the corvette in "The Cruel Sea"
