Hi guys

I have already pestered you with my main hobby of painting. I thought you might be interested that I have just got a commission to paint a part of this classic Canada painting by Benjamin West,

351094

This is exactly the sort of painting that I enjoy so much. I'm not going to attaempt the whole thing but just a detail of the central section. here is my almost finished grisaille that I will slowly build up to the final copy. Mr Day often uses this type of technique to paint his magnificent figures. I encourage you to give it a try next time you paint a figure, particularly if you like using oil paints.

A commision you say, jolly good John. It's looking good.

I like paintings like this. Our art museums don't have any like it. Really enjoyed the gallery at NSW Art Museum when in Sydney.

The technique with oils is in a way being practised with acrylics using glaze as the blender.

Cheers,
Richard

As always gentlemen you are very welcome and I appreciate your indulging my other hobby.

Grisaille just about done now. This simplifies the painting process since the drawing and the relative values are pretty much taken care of. Now its just colour.

Welcome Scottie

Moving right along. Between heat waves and golf I got some of the red coats added. As you probably know red is the toughest colour to paint since you cannot lighten it without it changing colour to pink or orange.

Fine work John!
Is it just me, or does the central character's face look like the Spitting Image puppet of Margaret Thatcher?

Thanks Greg

Pete Don't remember but I am sure you are right.

More coats painted, at least one that is not red. A few more details the background on the right, some value adjustments and then its just the faces and hands to go.
