Thanks for that Ralph and Peter, on that account I have looked up some reference images of these ammunition lockers, not many here's just two...Hi Pete.
On the last picture you can see the boxes where a small amount of ammo was stored.
For sustained fire the ammo was usually manhandled from the main stores via a human chain.

Must be dangerous having live ammunition all around you. Any shrapnel can set it off.
