28mm North Star Goblin personalities. Where there’s a whip, there’s a way….​

Hi all.
While on light duties I have got back into painting the little blokes…..I was surprisingly rusty on the first couple, but got faster as I went on. These are white metal 28mm one piece figures from North Star, and they have been in primer since before the Russian Armour GB…..still, they never held it against me

No more drivel then, bring on the lads……



A shaman, complete with skull on a stick…..supposed to be wearing a striped hyena skin, but it hasn’t come out that well. Quite like the skull though.


Ginger Baker, the signal drummer…..had a bit of fun with the trousers…..after all, a drummer needs loon pants doesn’t he.


Big Bruce the king, with a large helping of extra chin…..not my favourite sculpt, but he’s also got loons on.


Ron Harris, known as chopper for obvious reasons…..


Billy Bones, with his mate on his shoulder…..


….and last, but not least, Willy the whip….after all, where there’s a whip, there’s a way…..

Again simply brilliant work.....28mm sounds so much larger than 1/72..... Until you put it up against a bottle of paint.

And obviously very pleased to hear that your heading in the right direction and feel able to get back to table, even if only in a small way!

Cheers Andrew. I’d say they are about a third bigger than 1/72s, chunkier too.
Yep, feeling much better, but it will take a while to get my stamina back up. Not much effort needed to sit at a bench and push paint around though

Lovely, as always Tim. So sharp, so clean. The stripey loons are very impressive, especially at this scale. And love the metallics, too. Ron Harris's chopper is so smoooth!

Cheers mate. Stripes loons are actually quite easy, it’s all down the getting the paint consistency right…..
Ron’s chopper is just Vallejo metallics brush painted, steel basic and a brighter one for edge highlights. The golds and brasses are Dark star metallics. The Vallejo gold and copper coloured metals are pretty poor compared to the silvers.

Those little chaps do look superb..... certainly some production line you have with these things!

Cheers Andy. Glad you like them. Production line sort of sums it up. I always think of it as “it’s Tuesday so I’m painting trousers” . It’s the most efficient way to paint them. More time is usually taken changing colours than painting the figure after all

I use the same method on my wee krauts.......I try to do as many at once as is feasible, Usually six to eight minimum.

I've seen YouTuber Miniac rating Scale 75 Metal n' Alchemy golds, and AK 3rd Gen silvers. The silvers in particular look good, as they don't split up. I'm going to be spending some money at Scale Model World, methinks!

I’ve not found the Vallejo metallics split either. In fact, they handle just like regular paint, and can be mixed with normal paint in the same way. I like the gold and copper colours of the Darkstars. They have a much bigger range than most of the others. Not tried scale 75, MnA, or AK paints so can’t comment. Interested to find out how you get on with them though.

The only way to go Rick. With 15mm figures (closer to yours in scale) I usually set up thirty figures on popsicle stick stands and use related colours randomly on the uniforms (half a dozen or so at a time) to get a little variation in. On 28s I paint six to eight at a time, varying each batch. For character figures like these I paint them pretty much individually apart from basic colours like skin, armour and boots/leatherwork.
